Rebels Ride Second Quarter Surge in Route to 80–63 Victory at Texas A&M

1/20/2022 | Women's Basketball

Lashonda Monk Records her Fifth-Straight Double-Figure Outing

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After a tight first quarter, Ole Miss heated up in the second to ride it to an 80-63 victory over Texas A&M, from Reed Arena Thursday night. The win marks the first in program history on the road versus the Aggies, as the Rebels are off to their best start in SEC play since the 2009-10 season.

In her third straight start, Lashonda Monk led Ole Miss (16-2, 4-1 SEC) with 16 points for her fifth consecutive game in double figures. For the second straight game, five Rebels racked up double figures. With her 10th multi-block game of the season, Shakira Austin totaled four rejections and added 11 points, grabbing eight boards.

Ole Miss continues to drop dimes at a record pace, recording its eighth game this season with 20 or more as the team finished with 22. Monk and Mimi Reid totaled six each, while Madison Scott tied a career-high with three.

Angel Baker remains a sharpshooter from deep, knocking down 3-of-6 from beyond the arc as the Rebels totaled six as a squad.

The Rebels were ferocious, scoring 25 points off of 17 Texas A&M (11-7, 1-5 SEC) turnovers. While the Aggies struggled to hold onto the ball, Ole Miss did an exceptional job of taking care of it, with a season-low six turnovers.

Both teams traded blows back and forth early, as A&M utilized the three-pointer to its advantage with four threes' in the first ten minutes to keep pace with the Rebels to tie it up at 19 through one.

Right out of the gate in the second, Baker nailed back-to-back triples as Ole Miss worked to create separation from the Aggies. Ole Miss literally couldn't miss towards the end of the quarter, hitting seven buckets in a row to gain command. While the Rebels kept hitting shots, they were able to restrict A&M from finding the basket the last two minutes of the half to go up 47-34 through two. The 28 points scored marked the most in a quarter this season in conference play.

The energy did not go away for the Rebels, kicking off the third quarter with a 16-2 run, as Monk continued to pour it on the Aggies. A&M was unable to make its way past the Ole Miss defense, converting on 2-of-12 shots from the floor.

Texas A&M refused to go away quietly, hitting 5-of-6 shots to come within 18 points with two minutes remaining. However, Ole Miss had this one secure enough to walk out of Reed Arena with the 80-63 win.

The Rebels continue their road swing to take on their third ranked opponent of the season with a visit to No. 23 Kentucky from Rupp Arena on Sunday (Jan. 23). Tipoff against the Wildcats is slated for 11 a.m. CT, airing nationally on SEC Network.
