No. 18 Men’s Tennis Defeats Alabama, 4-3, in Non-Conference Match

Rebels Outlast SEC-West Foe on Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 18 Ole Miss men's tennis (3-0, 0-0 SEC) earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory versus the Alabama Crimson Tide (2-1, 0-0 SEC) at home on Saturday.
Ole Miss clinched the victory versus Alabama at 4-2. The two teams played out the remaining match and the Rebels defeated the Crimson Tide 4-3. Ole Miss has won six of the last seven matches decided by the score of 4-3 dating back to last season.
Alabama claimed the opening lead in the match, taking doubles 2-1. John Hallquist Lithén and Jakob Cadonau won for the Rebels at No. 3 doubles, earning a 6-3 victory versus Alabama's Rudi Christiansen and Zach Foster. Cadonau is now tied with Lukas Engelhardt for the most doubles victories for Ole Miss across the 2021-22 season with nine. Cadonau also has the least doubles losses for Ole Miss with one.
No. 28 Nikola Slavic leveled the match, 1-1, by trouncing German Samofalov, 6-3, 6-1. Slavic, 10-3 overall in singles, became the first Rebel to reach double-figure wins in either singles or doubles this season.
Simon Junk gave the Rebels the lead, 2-1, by surmounting Christiansen 6-2, 6-2.
Alabama's No. 83 Filip Planinsek then won over No. 44 Finn Reynolds in three sets to level the match 2-2.
The Rebels rallied, earning thee-set victories on Courts Nos. 6 and 5. Engelhardt's 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win clinched the match for the Rebels at 4-2.
The two teams mutually agreed to play out the final match on Court No. 3. The Crimson Tide took the final match, thus the Rebels won by a margin of one, 4-3.
Up Next: Ole Miss is set to host Oklahoma, Illinois and N.C. State for the regional section of the ITA National Indoor Tournament from Jan. 29 to Jan. 30. The Rebels are the No. 14 overall seed in the draw.
