Rebels Sit Fifth Following Opening Round at Rapsodo in the Desert

SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. – The Ole Miss women's golf team opened their spring season Sunday afternoon at the Rapsodo in the Desert in Superstition Mountain, Arizona. The Rebels ended day one of the tournament in fifth place after carding a team score of 289 (+1).

The Rebels logged a total of 15 birdies over the course of day one at Lost Gold Golf Course, battling against four other teams in Golfstat's Top 25 Collegiate Team Rankings. Ole Miss also finished five-under in par-5 scoring, the third-best amongst the field.

Leading the way for the Rebels in the opening tournament of the new year was junior Chiara Tamburlini. Tamburlini put together a blazing hot start to open her round, tallying five birdies in the front nine to jump up to the very top of the leaderboard at the halfway point of the day. The St. Gallen, Switzerland, native would close her round shooting one-over in the back nine, ending her day in a tie for third, logging a 68 (-4) for her efforts.

Also ending her day below par for Ole Miss was Andrea Lignell, whose five-birdie performance on Sunday put her in a tie for 10th behind a 71 (-1). While a late double bogey on Hole 17 dropped Lignell in the standings, the Swedish national's 2-under front nine helped to maintain her place within the top 10 heading into Monday.

Tamburlini and Lignell's five birdies apiece ties them each for second in the field in total birdies, while Tamburlini ends day one second in the field in par-4 scoring (-3).

Kicking off her 2022 spring season with a 74 (+2), senior Julia Johnson ended her day tallying a pair of bogeys, while notching par on the remaining 16 holes, tying herself for the most pars by an individual on the day. Johnson will now enter day two of competition in a tie for 24th place, looking to jump up the leaderboard over Monday's 36 holes of play.

Senior Ellen Hume ended her opening round with a total of three birdies, as the Whitwell, England, native carded a 76 (+4) to open her spring campaign in a tie for 33th. Rounding out play for the Rebels was redshirt-freshman McKinley Cunningham, who finished her day in a tie for 38th after shooting a 78 (+6).

Competing as an individual, freshman Natacha Host Husted ended her opening round of the spring with a 75 (+3), putting her in a tie for 30th.

Arizona State currently leads the way heading into the final day of competition, with the Sun Devils shooting a 278 (-10) as a team to jump into the early lead.

The Rebels will tee off on a shotgun start tomorrow morning, playing 18 holes to wrap up play in Arizona. Tee times are currently scheduled for 10 a.m. CT at Lost Gold Golf Course.
