Comeback Falls Short as No. 24 Ole Miss Drops to No. 15 Georgia, 62-52

1/30/2022 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – With its third straight game against a ranked opponent, Ole Miss was unable to overcome a slow start despite comeback efforts, falling to No. 15 Georgia 62-52 from the SJB Pavilion on Sunday.

In the second matchup between two ranked teams in SJB Pavilion history, Angel Baker led Ole Miss (17-4, 5-3 SEC) with her eighth double figure performance of the season with 13 points. Georgia (16-4, 5-3 SEC) was dominant in the paint, outscoring the Rebels 34-22 on the inside.

Defensively, Shakira Austin added her eighth double digit rebound game of the season with 11, while Caitlin McGee tied her season-high in blocks with two. Lashonda Monk was a menace, finishing with a season-high six steals.

Out of the gate, Ole Miss jumped out with back-to-back buckets before allowing a 19-2 Georgia run, as the Rebels struggled to hold onto the ball. A jumper from Baker broke the scoring drought as Ole Miss began to chip away at the Georgia lead.

Baker powered the Rebel offense, with six points in the second as the pressure was on to force stops at the other end of the court. A defensive battle broke out, as both teams went without a basket for over three minutes until Caitlin McGee dropped in a layup to reignite Ole Miss. Georgia continued to answer the Rebel response to carry a 33-20 lead into the half.

Three straight field goals from Ole Miss midway through the third sparked the Rebels to cut the deficit to 13. A second chance layup from Austin brought the game within 10 at 47-37, yet UGA fired back with three straight buckets to maintain control.

After being recognized for her 400th career steal pregame, the trend continued for Monk as she converted her fifth steal of the game into a layup to bring the game within nine with eight minutes remaining. She followed this up with another layup for two, as the Rebels remained within single digits, trailing by seven at 52-45. An 8-3 run from the Bulldogs put the game in their hands, to walk away with the 62-52 victory over Ole Miss.

The Rebels head back out on the road for their fourth road contest in a five-game stretch with a trip to Missouri on Thursday (Feb. 3). The Rebels are slated to take on the Tigers at 6 p.m. CT, airing nationally on SEC Network.
