Ole Miss Rifle Defeats Murray State for First Win

MURRAY, Ky – In a tight match, Ole Miss rifle picked up its first victory of the season over Murray State by a narrow margin of 4719-4716. The Rebels jumped ahead of the Racers with a high mark in air rifle.

The Rebels' (1-1, 0-1 GARC) Lea Horvath and Kristen Derting paced the field, with Horvath's 1185 leading all shooters. Derting was just two shots under her teammate, with a score of 1183. As a team, Ole Miss posted a 2341 mark in smallbore, followed by a 2378 in air rifle.
 
Horvath posted the best smallbore score and air rifle score for the Rebels. The junior's 587 in smallbore was second overall and her 598 in air rifle was the top score in the match. Derting shot the next best Rebels' score in smallbore with a 586. Julianna Hays performed well again, firing a season high 584, including a perfect prone score. Emma Pereira finished with an identical score of 584. Despite solid performances all around, the Rebels trailed 2346-2341, heading into air rifle.

Ole Miss' turned the match around with a strong air rifle performance. Derting and Horvath got out to great starts and finished with scores of 597 and 598. As a counter in air rifle, Martina Gratz posted the third best score, a 592. Hays rounded out the scoring, finishing just behind Gratz with a 591. All four finished with season highs in air rifle, and Derting tied her career-high.
 
Freshmen Hays and Pereira turned in even better scores than last week. Hays finished with a score of 1175 and was fifth out of the field. Pereira finished with a score of 1173, which was the sixth highest. Also, sophomore Katelyn Tinsley cruised to a new career high in air rifle (591) and aggregate (1162). She tied for the tenth best performance.

Murray State took the early lead after smallbore. Paola Paravati posted the best smallbore score of any a shooter with a 590. Scott Patterson individually finished third, scoring a 1181 (587 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle).
 
The Rebels stay in Murray for a match against UT Martin early Sunday morning. It is Ole Miss last non-conference match of the season.
