Men’s Tennis Suffers First Loss, 4-3, to No. 4 TCU

Slavic, Junk and Hain Earn Ranked Singles Victories

FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 15 Ole Miss men's tennis (7-1, 0-0 SEC) fell 4-3 to No. 4 TCU (6-1, 0-0 BIG XII) at the Bayard H. Freeman Tennis Courts on Sunday.
 
The Horned Frogs clinched the match at 4-0. No. 15 Ole Miss came back to win the final three singles matches to suffer a close one decision point defeat to No. 4 TCU. The Rebels fell to the Horned Frogs by the same score last season at home.
 
The Rebels and Horned Frogs started off with a competitive doubles point, 2-1 in favor of TCU. TCU got ahead 1-0 by No. 4 Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted taking No. 2 Doubles, 6-3. Finn Reynolds and Lukas Engelhardt leveled doubles with a 6-4 victory versus Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley on Court No. 1. Jakob Cadonau and John Hallquist Lithén fell 6-4 at No. 3 doubles in the opening point decider. The Horned Frogs took the opening lead.
 
TCU took the momentum from doubles into singles, winning the first three matches to conclude. TCU took No. 2 singles followed by No. 3 and No. 4 to clinch the victory, 4-0. The two teams agreed to play out the remaining three matches.
 
The Rebels turned ship in the final three matches, taking three decision. Points off of the Horned Frogs. Jan Soren Hain defeated No. 76 Fearnley as the Horned Frog withdrew due to retirement in the first set. Simon Junk won next, defeating No. 33 Maxted in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. Junk improved to 2-1 versus ranked opponents in singles this year. No. 28 Nikola Slavic won the final match of the day, defeating No. 68 Fomba 13-11 in a third-set 10-point tiebreak. Slavic improved to 5-1 versus ranked opponents this season and remained undefeated in dual singles matches. The Rebels fell to No. 4 TCU, 4-3.
 
Up Next: The Rebels return home on Friday, Feb. 11, to face North Alabama in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. CT. The two matches versus the Lions will serve as one final tine-up prior to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships (starting Feb. 18).
