Ole Miss Rifle Sits Fifth After Day 1 of NCAA Championships

Derting Leads Rebels at 589 in Smallbore Competition
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Kristen Derting led the way for No. 5 Ole Miss rifle on Day 1 of the 2022 NCAA Championships. The junior out of Salem, Oregon, fired a team-best 589 to earn a spot in the smallbore finals, where she placed seventh.
As a team, the Rebels turned in a 2337 to place fifth in the smallbore competition. Reigning national champion Kentucky paced the field at 2360, edging top-ranked Alaska Fairbanks (2351) to earn the smallbore team title.
Lea Horvath and Jillian Zakrzeski put forth a strong start for the Rebels. Horvath led the first relay through kneeling and prone at 398, Zakrzeski not far behind at 394. Horvath finished at 585 and Zakrzeski at 581 as the Rebels sat in fifth through one relay.
Claire O'Neel followed with a 575 as the lone Rebel in the second relay.
Derting and Abby Buesseler closed out the day in the final relay. Derting punched her ticket to the finals with Ole Miss' top score of the day at 589, while Buesseler's 582 was third among Rebel shooters on the day.
In the finals, Derting shot a 151.2 to sit seventh after the kneeling discipline. She moved up to 4th at 307.7 after a strong showing prone. The Rebel junior climbed as high as third but couldn't keep up the pace standing and finished seventh.
The 2022 season will come to its conclusion Saturday with the NCAA air rifle finals. Competition begins at 10:15 a.m. CT.
