Trio of Rebels Reside in the Top 10 Heading into Sunday’s Final Round
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss women's golf team fought strong winds at Forest Hills Golf Club on Saturday, as the Rebels braved the difficult playing conditions to end day one of the Valspar Augusta Invitational tied for second with a team score of 303 (+15) on the day.
The Rebels would end day one leading the field in par-3 scoring (+1), while also ranking second in total pars (51). Ending the day with 11 birdies as a team, Ole Miss also found themselves as one of just four teams to log an eagle on the day.
Originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday, strong winds reaching upwards of 20 miles-per-hour saw the tournament cut down to just 36 total holes of play, with 18 coming on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
"I'm really proud of the effort and great attitude our team showed today," said head coach Kory Henkes. "It was the toughest conditions I have experienced on the golf course, with winds consistently blowing 25-30 miles-per-hour. We look forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
Showing minimal struggles with the windy conditions on Saturday was junior Chiara Tamburlini. Tamburlini would lead the pack individually for a majority of the day before a late triple-bogey saw her settle into a tie for third heading into Sunday's final round of play.
Tamburlini would end her day with three birdies, while also ranking second in the field in par-3 scoring (-1). Besides her triple-bogey on No. 3, Tamburlini would finish over par on just one other hole on the day, helping to contribute to her 73 (+1) scorecard on the day.
Not far down the board from Tamburlini sits Andrea Lignell, whose 75 (+3) on the day sees Lignell in a tie for ninth heading into her final 18 holes on Sunday. Lignell sank a team-high four birdies on the day, which ranked second in the field in the category, while also tying Tamburlini for second in the field in par-3 scoring (-1) on the day.
Julia Johnson also ended her day in a tie for ninth alongside Lignell, as Johnson's 75 (+3) would include a total of 14 pars, leading the entire tournament field. Johnson would also finish two-over in par-4 scoring, which ranks as the fourth highest in the category amongst all golfers.
Senior Ellen Hutchinson-Kay and freshman Natacha Host Husted would round out the rotation for the Rebels on Saturday, as Hutchinson-Kay's day would end with an 80 (+8) while Host Husted would finish with an 82 (+10). Host Husted saw herself sink the lone eagle of the day for the Rebels, with the freshman doing so on the par five Hole 9.
South Carolina leads the way on the team leaderboard after logging a team score of 301 on the day, sitting just two strokes ahead of the Rebels heading into Sunday's finale.
Ole Miss will tee off for the final round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m. CT at Forest Hills Golf Club.
