No. 20 Rebels Win in Doubles, Upset by No. 50 Tigers
BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 20 Ole Miss men's tennis (11-5, 1-2 SEC) suffered a 5-2 road defeat against No. 50 LSU (8-5, 1-3 SEC) on Sunday.
Ole Miss fell to a lower-ranked opponent for the first time this season, losing 5-2 at No. 50 LSU. The Rebels won in doubles, but were only able to win one of six singles matches. Ole Miss split the weekend road trip as they earned a 6-1 win at Alabama on Friday.
The Rebels got ahead 1-0 in doubles by dominating No. 2 Doubles. Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk earned a "bagel" victory defeating Gabriel Diaz Freire and Hunter Kent, 6-0. LSU leveled doubles by taking No. 1 Doubles, 6-3. Nikola Slavic and John Hallquist Lithén clinched the doubles point by earning a 6-2 win versus LSU's Boris Kozlov and Nick Watson.
Ole Miss was unable to translate doubles success into singles momentum. No. 18 Slavic fell to No. 50 Hohmann to level the match at 1-1. Lukas Engelhardt re-established the Ole Miss lead, 2-1, by defeating Diaz Friere 6-4, 6-2. The Tigers would go on to win the remaining four singles matches to defeat the Rebels, 5-2. Ole Miss was last defeated by LSU in 2017.
Up Next: The Rebels will travel to Gainesville and Columbia next weekend to face the Gators on Friday and the Gamecocks on Sunday. Both programs are ranked in the ITA top 10.
