Four Rebels Finish in Top 20 as Late Push Gives Ole Miss First Team Title of the Season
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss women's golf team came away with a share of the team championship on Sunday at the Valspar Augusta Invitational, after the Rebels logged a two-day team score of 590 (+14) to earn a share of the event title.
Finishing the tournament first in par-3 scoring (E), as well as logging 27 total birdies and 107 pars as a team on the weekend, the Rebels' 287 (-1) final round on Sunday was enough to help push the Rebels up into a tie for first with co-champions South Carolina.
"Today was a great day for the Rebs," said head coach Kory Henkes. "We fought hard all day to come from behind. I'm really proud of the way we handled such tough conditions this week and pulled through for the co-champion win. The team has been working so hard for this win and it was well deserved."
This marks the first team title for the Rebels since capturing the Gators Invitational crown on February 23, 2021, where the team also took home co-champion honors after tying host Florida with a three-day team score of 856 (+16) on the week.
Matching her season-best finish of fourth place was Chiara Tamburlini, who fell just short of earning her first collegiate individual title in Augusta with a final two-round score of 146 (+2). Tamburlini would end the tournament leading all golfers in par-3 scoring having gone three-under in the category.
Tamburlini's fourth place finish marked the third time this season that the St. Gallen, Switzerland, native has earned a top 5 finish, as well as her fifth top 5 finish of her career. She has now finished within the top 20 in all eight of her 2021-22 tournament appearances for the Rebels.
Just behind Tamburlini on the leaderboard would sit Andrea Lignell, with Lignell's two-round total of 148 (+4) securing yet another top 10 finish for the junior, as Lignell would end her time in Georgia tied for 10th overall. This now marks the fourth time of the season and seventh time of her career that Lignell has earned a top 10 finish for the Rebels, having finished tied for fourth in the 2022 Gators Invitational just a week prior.
Also tying for 10th to conclude her tournament in Augusta was senior Julia Johnson, who has now earned her 26th career top 10 finish and 50th career top 20 finish with the Rebels. Johnson would rank second in the field in total pars with 27 over her two rounds played.
Helping to push the Rebels up into their eventual co-champion title with her final round of 68 (-4) on the day was freshman Natacha Host Husted, as Host Husted eight-birdie performance would tie her for most birdies of any golfer on the weekend. The late push from Host Husted helped earn her a tie for 18th place, marking her third top 20 finish for the Rebels in her young career.
Rounding out the Rebel rotation on the day was senior Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, as she finished tied for 46th overall individually with her two-day score of 156 (+12).
Following a week off, Ole Miss will return to action for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia. The tournament is set to run March 25-27 at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
