Rebels Look to Bounce Back Sunday
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss softball fell behind early and was unable to complete the comeback Saturday night, dropping game two of the series 7-3 to Mississippi State at Nusz Park.
The Bulldogs got to Brooke Vestal early, loading the bases and posting a four-run first inning for the second straight day. They carried the momentum into the second, using a two-run home run to make it a six-run deficit for the Rebels.
Ole Miss showed fight in the top of the third, cutting the lead in half. Nyomi Jones and Tate Whitley led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A batter later, Paige Smith singled up the middle and the first run of the game came home on a throwing error.
With runners in scoring position, Roper scored on a sacrifice fly by Abbey Latham, and Sydney Gutierrez drove in Smith with an RBI single.
Catelyn Riley, who took over for Vestal in the second, continued to pitch well in the circle. She threw the final 4.2 innings, only allowing one run and kept Ole Miss within striking distance. She struck out the side in the third and stranded a pair in the fourth.
Mississippi State tacked on one more insurance run in the fifth, with an RBI double. Ole Miss left runners on in each of the final four innings, just unable to piece together hits.
The Rebels and Bulldogs will wrap up the series Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on SECN+.
