Ole Miss Football Practice Report: New Beginnings

3/22/2022 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – While construction continues on the Olivia and Archie Manning Athletics Performance Center, Lane Kiffin and his staff began construction on the 2022-23 Ole Miss football team with the opening of spring practice Tuesday morning.

Kiffin, surrounded himself by several new faces on his coaching staff, will work to replace 33 letterwinners, including 14 starters, but he certainly won't be without options. The Rebels brought in a transfer portal class currently ranked No. 1 by 247Sports, featuring 13 new players who will all be vying to make an immediate impact.

"Good to be back, to be out there on the field with the guys and a lot of excitement because there are a lot of new guys," Kiffin said. "It's almost like how it used to be in the fall when you had all the mid-years and all the new guys in the fall to look at. Spring usually is not this way, but with the portal and all of the guys new guys, it's pretty exciting to be able to go out there and look at all the guys that used to just be basically high schools guys that were a long way away, and now you've got guys that have already played and should have significant roles. It's pretty exciting."

PRIMED FOR PRO DAY
While several new Rebels began their journey together, the practice fields were also filled with familiar faces—Braylon Sanders, Chance Campbell, Jake Springer, Jahcour Pearson and Mac Brown were among the Rebel alums taking in practice and making final preparations for Wednesday's Pro Day.

Matt Corral will take part in Pro Day at the Manning Center, as will Sam Williams, Jerrion Ealy, Snoop Conner and many other longtime contributors.

"There's a lot of weird things, so it is what it is you know," Kiffin said. "It's been a long time since I had Wilson out there, and not just here, going all the way back to FAU and Kevin Smith. So, there's a lot of new and Matt's part of that. That's two years, those other guys this would have been ear six. There's a lot of different things and that comes with success. But change is good, you've got to embrace change. And new people have new ideas."

LET THE BATTLE BEGIN
With the exodus of talent to the next level, starting spots across the field will be up for grabs, but most eyes will be on the offensive backfield. Returners Luke Altmyer and Kinkead Dent will line up alongside USC transfer Jaxson Dart in the quarterback battle. While everyone will no doubt anxiously await a resolution to that battle, Kiffin said his staff won't rush to a decision.

"All three guys will have a chance," Kiffin said. "Always in these things, it would be best for it to be early from the standpoint of the team and everybody knowing, but we're not going to rush it. These things have gone on forever, we ideally never want it to go into the season when they're playing. That's never ideal, but that's even happened once. So, you gotta try to make the right decision and the more time, the more input, the more information going on. We don't have preseason games, so the more you can get, the better, so you need to be patient sometimes."

HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
One of Ole Miss' latest transfers to arrive, Ulysses Bentley IV, joined a running back room that will look to replace its top three producers from a season ago. Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner are off to the NFL, and Henry Parrish joined running backs coach Kevin Smith in Miami.

That left Kentrel Bullock, who ran 17 times for 78 yards last year, as the lone returning Rebel running back with more than two carries. He is joined by true freshman Quinshon Judkins, who is already in for spring practice, Bentley and TCU transfer Zach Evans.

"We've lost our top three running production-wise running backs from a year ago, so that was a very important addition," Kiffin said of Bentley. "I think he did some great things there when he was healthy. Kind of had some Devin Singletary type of runs and stuff, so unique timing with all of this and to be able to add guys and they are here today is kind of crazy. I mean I've made all of the references to we have free agency, but even we have free agency and even more to the fact that a guy's at another program a few days ago and now he's here it truly is like free agency."
