Nikola Slavic Earns Singles and Doubles Victories
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 39 Ole Miss men's tennis (11-8, 1-5 SEC) fell 6-1 to No. 28 Auburn (15-4, 4-2 SEC) at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on Friday.
The Rebels fell to 11-8 overall on the season after suffering a 6-1 defeat to the Tigers. Ole Miss is now 9-2 at home this season. The Rebels last played at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on March 6. Ole Miss has been defeated in four straight matches.
The match started with a tight, split-decision, doubles portion. The Tigers got ahead in doubles as No. 60 Tad Maclean and Finn Murgett took down No. 12 Finn Reynolds and Lukas Engelhardt 6-2. John Hallquist Lithén and Nikola Slavic leveled doubles for the Rebels by also winning 6-2 at No. 3 Doubles. Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk tied Tyler Stice and Jan Galka, 4-4, at No. 2 Doubles, but were broken and the Tigers duo earned a 6-4 win to clinch the opening decision point.
Auburn took the momentum from doubles to win five of six matches in singles. The Tigers extended their lead to two by first taking No. 5 Singles in straight sets.
No. 36 Slavic cut the Auburn lead back to one by defeating No. 91 Stice in straight sets at No. 1 Singles, 6-3, 6-3. Slavic improved to 9-5 in dual matches this season. Auburn led 2-1.
Auburn went on to win singles on Courts Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 to earn a 6-1 overall victory. The Rebels forced the Tigers to three sets at No. 3 and No. 6 Singles. Raul Dobai clinched the win for Auburn at the No. 4 position, defeating Engelhardt 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Up Next: Ole Miss will get one day off before playing against No. 12 Kentucky at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday.
