Former Mountain West Golfer of the Year to Use Final Year of Eligibility Beginning in the Fall

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's golf has officially added graduate transfer Hugo Townsend of Boise State to the team's 2022-23 team roster, head coach Chris Malloy announced Tuesday.

Townsend, a four-year letterwinner with the Broncos since 2018, saw a strong junior season in which the Boden, Sweden, native took home honors that included being named a PING Third Team All-American, as well as the 2021 Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Year.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Hugo to our family," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Anytime you can add a player with his credentials, it's a great day for your program. We could tell instantly when he visited that it was a great fit. We look forward to getting him to Oxford."

This season, Townsend finds himself currently ranked No. 24 in the nation in the PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Rankings, while also holding the No. 62 spot in the nation according to Golfstat's NCAA Player Rankings. Townsend was able to notch top 20 finishes in all five of the Broncos' fall tournaments to kick off his senior season, including a second place finish at the Oregon State Invitational (-5) followed by a third place finish at the Little Rock Invitational (-7).

Away from Boise State, Townsend has accrued numerous amateur and international team championships and honors over his young playing career. Last fall Townsend landed a second place finish individually for Team Sweden at the 2021 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, while also being selected to compete on the International Team in the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup.

Additionally, Townsend was able to capture the 2020 Idaho State Amateur Championship, finishing the tournament 10-under on the week, while also reaching the U.S. Amateur Round of 32 in 2020 and Round of 16 in 2021. Townsend is currently ranked No. 46 in the world in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

Townsend has also found success in the classroom, having earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar recognition in 2020 as well as being named to the All-Mountain West Academic Spring Team each year of his career at Boise State.

The son of former PGA TOUR professional and two-time Ryder Cup attendee Peter Townsend, Hugo Townsend is set to enroll at Ole Miss and begin playing his final year of collegiate eligibility with the Rebels beginning in fall of 2022.
