Women’s Golf Sits Fifth After First Round at SEC Championship

4/13/2022 | Women's Golf

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team kicked off postseason play on Wednesday with a 292 (+4) during the first round at the 2022 SEC Championship, in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Rebels sit fifth on the team leaderboard and currently lead the field in total birdies in the opening round, tallying 15 over the course of day one. The Rebels also rank first in par-5 scoring in the tournament after shooting five-under on Wednesday.

Only the top eight finishing teams will qualify for the match play portion of the tournament on Saturday, with seeding reflecting the top eight standings at the conclusion of Friday's final round of stroke play.

"Today was a solid start for our team," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We did a lot of things really well in the windy conditions. The team also did a great job of managing our mistakes and they battled hard all day long."

Chiara Tamburlini led the charge for Ole Miss following a strong opening round at Greystone, shooting a 2-under, 70 that helped put her into a tie for third heading into Thursday. Tamburlini sank a total of four birdies, as well as led the field in par-3 scoring (-2) at the conclusion of the opening round.

Julia Johnson, Andrea Lignell and McKinley Cunningham all wrapped up day one in Birmingham tied for 22nd overall with rounds of 74 (+2). Lignell led the Rebels with 13 pars on the day.

Johnson is looking for another top 10 finish at the SEC Championship. The senior from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, has finished in the top 10 in all three of her previous appearances in Birmingham.

Cunningham was fueled by a hot start to her tournament, shooting two-under over her opening 12 holes of the tournament. Playing in her first postseason round for the Rebels after redshirting for the 2020-21 season, Cunningham's opening round concluded with three total birdies.

Freshman Natacha Host Husted rounded out the Rebel lineup by shooting a 78 (+6) on the day, which would include a total of four birdies.

The Rebels are right back in action on Thursday for round two of the SEC Championship, with the team's tee times set to begin starting at 8:50 a.m. CT at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
