Rebels Head into Friday Looking to Clinch Top 8 Spot for Quarterfinals
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf saw day two of the SEC Championship end with the Rebels sitting fifth on the team leaderboard, as a two-day team score of 590 (+14) helped the team maintain their position heading into Friday's stroke play finale.
Battling the winds at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham for the second-consecutive day, the Rebels have still managed to tally 27 birdies on the week thus far, ranking second in the field. However, a tightly contested midfield sets Friday up to be a heated battle, with the teams in fourth through 11th place all being separated by just seven strokes at the conclusion of round two.
Only the top eight finishing teams will qualify for the match play portion of the tournament on Saturday, with seeding reflecting the top eight standings at the conclusion of Friday's final round of stroke play.
Julia Johnson and Andrea Lignell entered the day level with one another after both logging 74s on day one to enter round two in a tie for 22nd. Day two again saw mirrored scorecards for Johnson and Lignell, with the pair both logging scores of 73 (+1) to pull the duo just inside of the top 20, sitting tied for 16th.
Johnson's round saw success over her front nine, where the St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native would go even before eventually gaining one stroke in her back nine. Lignell's success would come on the back end of her day in Birmingham, with the junior sitting at three-over through her first 14 holes before firing home three birdies and a bogey over her last four holes of the day to finish with her 73.
Chiara Tamburlini would end her second day of competition with a 79 (+7), putting her two strokes behind her teammates Johnson and Lignell in a tie for 30th overall.
The two Rebel freshmen of Natacha Host Husted and McKinley Cunningham would round out the day for the Rebels, as Host Husted would bring home a solid card of 73 (+1) on the day, while Cunningham would finish by scoring an 80 (+8). Host Husted's day ends with her ranking fourth in the field with seven total birdies after the Copenhagen, Denmark, native logged a trio of them in quick succession on Holes 2 through 4 of her second round.
Just one round of stroke play remains before an individual SEC champion and match play seeding is determined, and the Rebels will look to capitalize in Friday's third round with Ole Miss' tee times scheduled to begin at 8:50 a.m. CT at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
