Quarterfinal Matchup Against Florida Suspended Through Nine Holes Due to Darkness
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team punched their ticket into the SEC Championship Quarterfinals on Friday after the Rebels were able to log a third round team score of 286 (-2) to secure the No. 4 seed in the match play bracket later in the day.
The Rebels are currently matched up against No. 5 seed Florida in their quarterfinal, with the Gators holding a 3-2 lead over Ole Miss with all five pairings into the back nine. Play was suspended due to darkness, leaving the remainder of each matchup to be played on Saturday.
The Rebels were able to navigate a tightly contested field heading into the day thanks in large part to Chiara Tamburlini and Julia Johnson. The Rebel duo both finished tied for ninth at the conclusion of stroke play on Friday. Ole Miss ended stroke play leading the field in total birdies on the week, tallying 46 over three rounds.
Tamburlini surged for the Rebels on Friday coming off of a 79 (+7) just a day prior, as the St. Gallen, Switzerland, native fired home a team-best 68 (-4). Tamburlini found her success early-on in her day, finding birdies on three of her opening five holes, before ending her day with five total. Her round of 68 ties her career-best 18-hole mark, which she had set earlier this spring at the Rapsodo in the Desert.
Also finding early success in their round on the day was Johnson, as the senior followed in her teammate Tamburlini's footsteps, stringing birdies together on three of her opening five holes, including a chip-in on the par 4 Hole 9. Johnson found herself at 5-under through 14 holes on the day, before shooting a combined three-over on Hole 1 and 2 to finish with a 70 (-2) in her round. Johnson has now finished in the top 10 of the SEC Championship individually in all four of her appearances in the tournament.
Freshman Natacha Host Husted saved her best round of the tournament for Friday as well, ending her day off by carding a 71 (-1) that included a trio of birdies. Host Husted finished tied for 26th to end stroke play, the highest individual finish for a Rebel freshman at the SEC Championship since Ellen Hutchinson-Kay finished tied for 21st at the event in 2019.
Andrea Lignell and McKinley Cunningham capped off the Rebels' day with Lignell tallying a 77 (+5) and Cunningham a 79 (+7). Both sank a total of three birdies a piece in their respective rounds.
With their fourth place finish on the team leaderboard in stroke play, the Rebels clinched the No. 4 seed in the match play quarterfinals, matching themselves up against the No. 5 seed Florida Gators. It marked the fourth consecutive SEC Championship in which the Rebels have qualified for match play.
To open the Rebels' No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup with Florida, junior Lignell got off to a hot start, capturing two of the opening three holes against Escobar Domingo. Despite the score eventually finding its way back to even pegging through eight, Lignell would regain her two-hole advantage by winning two of her last three holes of the day prior to play being suspended.
Johnson also found success in the front nine of her matchup against Florida's Maisie Filler, jumping out to a two-hole lead through the opening five holes, a lead which she would hold until play was suspended for the pairing through nine holes.
The Gators hold leads in the remaining three matches, with Host Husted trailing her opponent by two holes, Tamburlini trailing by three, and freshman Maddie May trailing by five. All three of these matchups are through at least the front nine of play.
Tee times for tomorrow's continuation of the quarterfinals matchups are currently set for 8 a.m. CT at Greystone Golf Club, but those times are subject to change as inclement weather is forecast for the Birmingham area beginning early Saturday morning.
