Softball’s Late Rally Falls Short Against No. 9 Florida

Rebels Drop Game One to the Gators, 7-4

OXFORD, Miss. – Mikayla Allee blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning to make things interesting, but Ole Miss couldn't quite cap off the comeback, falling 7-4 to No. 9 Florida Thursday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

A five-run fourth inning was the difference in the ball game as Florida (32-9, 9-7 SEC) was able to put pressure on Ole Miss (29-12, 5-8 SEC) and take a seven-run lead. The Rebels answered with four of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too late.

Catelyn Riley was sharp through the first two frames, matching Florida's Elizabeth Hightower as both pitchers managed to strand runners early.

The Gators got on the board first in the third, capitalizing on a pair of infield singles and an RBI double. They added to their lead in the fourth after loading the bases. Back-to-back doubles cleared the bases, and Florida added a seventh run on a wild pitch.

Savannah Diederich and Aynslie Furbush came in to pitch, keeping the Florida offense at bay for the final 3.1 innings of play.

Despite being down seven, Ole Miss continued to battle. Paige Smith reached on a drop third strike and was pinch run for by Nyomi Jones to start a late rally in the sixth inning. Sydney Gutierrez and Riley tallied back-to-back singles to score the speedy Jones.

With two on, Allee belted her fourth home run of the season over the wall in left to pull the Rebels back within three. After Furbush retired the side in the top of the seventh, Tate Whitley led off the inning with a walk, but that was all for Ole Miss as Florida's Natalie Lugo closed out the ball game.

The Rebels will look to even the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT on SECN+.
