Rebels Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 44 Arkansas 4-3 in a Thriller

Simon Junk Plays Hero for the Rebels at No. 5 Singles
OXFORD, Miss – No. 36 Ole Miss men's tennis (15-11, 3-8 SEC) earned a come from behind 4-3 victory at home versus No. 44 Arkansas (14-12, 3-8 SEC) on Friday.
The Razorbacks got ahead in the match early, 1-0, by sweeping doubles, 2-0. Arkansas won on Courts No. 1 and 2. Nikola Slavic and John Hallquist Lithén held a 5-3 lead at the time of the doubles stoppage at No. 3 Doubles.
Lithén won quickly for the Rebels in singles to level the match 1-1 overall. The Swedish Sophomore defeated Oscar Pinto Sansano in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 Singles. Lithén improved to 17-14 overall and 13-10 in singles dual matches this season. Finn Reynolds won next at No. 2 Singles to give the Rebels their first lead of the evening. Reynolds defeated Arkansas' Nico Rousset 6-2, 6-4, to put Ole Miss ahead 2-1 overall in the match.
Arkansas then re-tied the match by taking No. 1 singles in two sets. No. 58 Alex Reco defeated Slavic 6-3, 6-3. The Razorbacks then regained the lead by taking No. 6 Singles. No. 96 Aleksa Bucan defeated Jan Soren Hain in two sets, 7-6 (8), 6-2.
Lukas Engelhardt then re-tied the match again, 3-3. The Rebel came from behind to defeat the Razorback's Adrien Burdet, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in three sets.
The match, deadlocked at 3-3, all came down to No. 5 Singles. After dropping the first set in a tirebreak, Simon Junk won the second, 6-3, to force a third versus Melvin Manuel. Junk and Manuel battled back-and-forth in the match-deciding set, tied to 4-4. Junk broke Manuel to take a 5-4 lead. Weather ensued in the area and play was suspended with Junk and Manuel tied 30-30 in the proceeding game.
Play was resumed minutes later inside the William F. Galtney Tennis Center. Junk claimed the ultimate game on serve, to defeat Manuel 6-4 in the third set and clinch a 4-3 victory for the Rebels in dramatic fashion.
Up Next: The Rebels return home Sunday for Senior Day to face No. 50 Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. CT. Ole Miss will celebrate the careers of Finn Reynolds and Jan Soren Hain in the ultimate match of the 2022 regular season.
