Kiffin, Ivey, Watkins Meet with Media as Rebels Begin Final Week of Spring Practice
OXFORD, Miss. - At the onset of the fifth and final week of spring practice, Ole Miss football head coach Lane Kiffin and players Jared Ivey and Jordan Watkins met with members of the media to discuss practice and look ahead to this weekend's Grove Bowl.
TALKING TO THE TRANSFERS
Kiffin and his staff saw enormous contributions from transfers in 2021 and hit the portal hard once again for 2022. While there should be no shortage of talent for this year's Rebel squad, replicating the chemistry that drove last year's team will be the key. So far, the newcomers have felt right at home.
"Players have brought me in and just showed love from the start," said junior defensive end Jared Ivey.
Ivey is in his first season with the Rebels, coming to Ole Miss from Georgia Tech where he started 11 games and recorded over 30 tackles in 2021. Ivey is expected to step up and play a large part in what the coaching staff has touted as a very deep defensive line rotation.
"I like the way they work," Ivey said. "I learn a lot from Cedric Johnson, I learn a lot from Tavius Robinson, I learn a lot from KD Hill, JJ Pegues, all the guys that have already been here."
Another transfer expected to be a large contributor for Ole Miss is wide receiver Jordan Watkins. The junior transfer from Louisville, Kentucky, had over 500 yards and four touchdowns for his hometown Cardinals last season and is looking to help fill the void left by the departure of Braylon Sanders and Dontario Drummond to the NFL.
"I just really felt Lane Kiffin's offense would fit me," Watkins said. "Just really the perfect opportunity."
GEARING UP FOR THE GROVE BOWL
This Saturday will the Rebels will show the public a glimpse of how they'll look this fall as they cap off spring practice with in the Grove Bowl at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The scrimmage is set to start at noon CT and will be free for all fans to attend.
"We'll probably draft teams, just so it's fun for them," Kiffin said.
Amid a full weekend in Oxford with the Double Decker festival and baseball hosting rival Mississippi State, the Rebels look to show that they have chemistry as a team despite all the new faces.
"I'm not looking at it as an individual," Ivey said. "I'm excited to just go out there and play competitive ball for the first time in a minute, celebrate with my guys and just have fun with it."
UP NEXT
The Rebels conclude their spring practices this Thursday with a closed practice followed by media interviews.
Ole Miss will host its annual spring game, the Grove Bowl, this Saturday. More detailed information regarding the Grove Bowl will be made released at a later date.
