Rebels Earn Third Ranked Win in 2022
STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 43 Ole Miss men's tennis (12-10, 2-7 SEC) won 5-2 on the road at No. 35 Mississippi State (13-9, 3-6 SEC) on Sunday.
The Rebels returned to the win column by defeating rival No. 35 Mississippi State at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday afternoon. Ole Miss earned its second road SEC win of the season (at Alabama on March 11) and earned its third victory versus a ranked opponent (No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 22 Oklahoma).
Ole Miss grinded out a tough doubles point to open the match. All three matches ended within minutes of each other. Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk won first, 7-5 in a tiebreak, over Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic to put the Rebels ahead, 1-0. Mississippi State leveled doubles, 1-1, by taking No. 1 Doubles moments later, 7-5. John Hallquist Lithén and Nikola Slavic earned a 7-4 win in the tiebreak to clinch the doubles point and put the Rebels ahead 1-0.
The Bulldogs leveled the match, 1-1, to open singles. Mississippi State's Davide Tortora earned a straight set win over Jakob Cadonau at No. 6 Singles. The Rebels won four out of the next five matches.
No. 110 Finn Reynolds won first, defeating the higher-ranked No. 72 Malesevic 7-5, 6-2. Reynolds has faces six-straight ITA ranked opponents. Lithén extended the Ole Miss lead to 3-1 by defeating Hernandez in two sets, 6-4, 7-5. No. 36 Slavic defeated No. 36 Florian Broska moments later at No. 1 Singles to clinch the match for the Rebels. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, 4-6, Slavic rallied through the third, 6-3, to seal the Rebels' victory. Slavic earned his seventh victory versus ranked opponents in 2021-22. The Rebels and Bulldogs played out the final two matches.
Junk extended the Ole Miss lead to 5-1 by defeating Alberto Colas in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 7-5. Gregor Ramskogler defeated Lukas Engelhardt in the ultimate match to result in a 5-2 Ole Miss final score.
Up Next: The Rebels are on the road next Sunday to face Texas A&M in Bryan-College Station. Ole Miss defeated Texas A&M earlier this season at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
