Three Wins, Four NCAA Top-30 Marks for Rebels
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field fought through a strong, biting wind and unseasonably cold temperatures to several strong performances at the first day of competition at the fifth annual Joe Walker Invitational on Friday.
The day – which was highlighted by the official dedication of the brand-new Jerry Hollingsworth Track & Field / Cross Country Facility that houses the Rebels' new locker rooms – featured several impressive outings despite the weather. That included the highly-anticipated distance carnival Friday evening that featured two facility records and several of the fastest times in the nation.
Starting things off for the Rebels in that evening session was a career race from senior Kristel van den Berg in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, who finished as the runner-up at a 10-second PR of 10:07.73. That time improves on her spot as the No. 3 runner in school history, and this year it stands as the best time in the SEC as well as the No. 9 time in the NCAA and No. 6 in the East Region. Morgan Claire Rose also notched a big PR of 16 seconds at 10:18.64 in eighth place, launching her up to No. 4 in school history in addition to No. 23 in the NCAA, No. 15 in the East Region and No. 3 in the SEC this season.
Indoor NCAA mile champion Mario Garcia Romo opened his outdoor season with a tight battle against South Carolina's Anass Essayi in the fast section of the men's 1500-meter, who edged out Garcia Romo at the line by a second for the win at 3:39.03. Garcia Romo ended up at 3:40.27, which currently stands as the No. 3 time in the NCAA and No. 2 in the SEC.
In the women's 1500-meter, indoor NCAA mile runner-up Sintayehu Vissa opened her outdoor campaign with a near-PR of her own. Vissa took runner-up honors at 4:17.57, which fell less than a second off her collegiate best and Ole Miss record 4:16.70 run last season. Skylar Boogerd notched a PR in eighth place at 4:21.40, making her the No. 7 performer in school history.
In the women's hammer, junior Jalani Davis moved up the national leaderboard with her third-place performance at a season-best 64.37m/211-02. That throw puts her No. 19 in the nation, as well as No. 6 in the East Region and No. 4 in the SEC this year. Over in the men's hammer, senior Montel Johnson led the way in fifth place at a PR toss of 61.24m/200-11, which catapulted him up to No. 7 in school history and No. 34 in the East Region this season.
Ole Miss received a pair of powerful races in the women's 200-meter dash from Ariyonna Augustine and Olivia Womack. The duo went back-to-back, with Augustine finishing third at 23.52 (+2.3) and Womack fourth at 23.62 (+2.3). With the wind registering below the NCAA allowable 4.0 meters per second, those times rank as collegiate bests, with Augustine moving up to No. 8 and Womack to No. 12 in Ole Miss history. Jayda Eckford wasn't far off in fifth place at a season-best 23.75 (+2.3).
Senior Elijah Dryer came away with the win in the men's 200, running a wind-legal season-best 21.06 (+0.6). Other Rebels winning on Friday included Lyndsey Reed in the women's pole vault (4.08m/13-04.50) and Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's long jump (7.10m/23-03.50).
In the women's heptathlon, Sara Van Aken currently sits in second place through four completed events at 3,146 points after winning the high jump at 1.74m/5-08.50 and notching a PR in the shot put at 11.33m/37-02.25. Others also competing in the multis include Meg Goebel (8th, 2,768) and Annie Strong (14th, 2,340), as well as two in the men's decathlon in Pierce Genereux (3rd, 3,121) and Peyton Lowery (4th, 3,108).
Competition resumes on Day Two with the men's decathlon at 10 a.m. CT, with a senior ceremony planned at 11 a.m. CT for 27 total Rebels.
