Freshman Men’s Golfer Cameron Tankersley Snags A Top-5 Finish at Badger Invitational

9/13/2022 | Men's Golf

Cameron Tankersley led the Rebels tied for 3rd at 7-under overall

MADISON, Wisc. – In its opening tournament of the 2022-23 campaign, Ole Miss men's golf rounded out its time at the Badger Invitational after 36 holes to finish tied for 6th place.

The Rebels made 27 birdies and four eagles to rise three spots on the leaderboard, ending the tournament 2-under par on the week (290-284—574).

"This week was certainly disappointing on many fronts," said head coach Chris Malloy. "There is no doubt that this group can be really special as this year goes on, however, we need to be a lot better in many areas of the game than we were this week. We need to toughen up and be ready to handle any adversity that is thrown our way. We will get back, regroup and be ready to go next week."

"It was great to see Cam start his college career on a good note. He did a tremendous job putting himself in contention to win this week but just came up a hair short. This will not be the last time he is in that same position."

Freshman Cameron Tankersley led for the Rebels throughout the entirety of the two rounds. During Tuesday's round, Tankersley made five birdies throughout the day to go 4-under. Tankersley rose five spots on the leaderboard to tie for 3rd place for his opening debut as a Rebel. Tankersley is the first Ole Miss freshman to earn a top-5 finish since Jackson Suber (2018-19).

Senior Sarut Vongchaisit chipped in three birdies in the final round but remained even at the end of play. Vongchaisit rounded out playing tied for 29th.

Freshman Tom Fischer shot for 1-under during his back nine performance with four birdies throughout the day but ended the tournament at 2-over.

Graduate transfer Hugo Townsend contributed a pair of birdies and an eagle to help advance the Rebels on the leaderboard and shot his best round of the tournament at even for par. Townsend shot for 4-over overall. The Rebels' third freshman in the lineup, Patton Samuels rounded it out for the Rebels at 5-over overall. Samuels made three birdies throughout play on Tuesday.

Following a short break, the Rebels will return to action to take part in SEC Match Play in Birmingham, Alabama. The tournament will run September 25-27.
