Freshman Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan Breaks Shot Put Record for Second Straight Week

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan continued to lay waste to the school record book, resetting his own top mark in the shot put to lead the Rebels at Day One of the Razorback Invitational on Friday.

Robinson-O'Hagan held his own in a stacked field in the men's shot put, which helped contribute to the Razorback Invitational being one of the premier meets nationwide this week. The lone freshman in the final, Robinson-O'Hagan launched one 19.73m/64-08.75 on his sixth and final attempt of the night to finish third behind All-Americans and SEC upperclassmen Josh Sobota of Kentucky (20.09m/65-11) and John Meyer of LSU (20.08m/65-10.50).

That throw takes down his six-day old previous record of 19.58m/64-3 set last Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational. On the year, Robinson-O'Hagan now ranks No. 7 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the SEC, and he currently leads all other NCAA freshmen by more than 5.5 feet.

Furthermore, Robinson-O'Hagan now stands as one of the best freshman shot putters in recent memory nationally. His throw tonight registers as the eighth-best by a freshman nationally since 2018, as well as the seventh-best this early into a freshman season in the same timespan. In those five years, only Arizona's Jordan Geist (21.45m/70-04.50; 2018), two-time NCAA Champion Tripp Piperi of Texas (19.83m/65-00.75; 2018) and Wisconsin's Andrew Stone (19.82m/65-00.50; 2022) hold better freshman bests than Robinson-O'Hagan.

Over in the women's shot put, All-American senior Jalani Davis had her best performance of the year, winning at a season-best 17.05m/55-11.25. That throw launches her up to No. 9 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the SEC this season. Fellow All-American and senior Jasmine Mitchell gave Ole Miss a one-two punch, finishing runner-up at 16.09m/52-09.50. Davis and Mitchell now stand as the lone duo in the nation both at 17 meters in the shot put and 24 meters in the weight throw, with the pair currently leading the NCAA in the latter.

Ole Miss also received a season-best performance from senior Sara Van Aken in the women's pentathlon after a grueling day of competition on Friday. Van Aken notched a season-best 3,812 points to finish ninth overall, not far off her career-best 3,850 from last season's SEC Championships. Van Aken recorded either a season or personal best in four of five events, including a PR in the shot put at 11.93m/39-01.75.

Action resumes for the Rebels at 9:10 a.m. CT with Aiden Britt in the men's 3K, followed by Dalton Hengst in the men's mile at 9:45 a.m. CT and the resumption of the men's heptathlon for Pierce Genereux and Peyton Lowery at 10:15 a.m. CT.
