Rebels Fall to Aggies 3-1 at Home
OXFORD, Miss. – Rounding out a three-match homestand at home, Ole Miss volleyball fell to Texas A&M 3-1 on Friday night inside the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Despite a season-high 15 blocks, the Rebels (8-8, 2-3 SEC) couldn't get the offense going on the Texas A&M defense. The Aggies (11-4, 3-2 SEC), who are receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25, outhit Ole Miss .171 to .121. Payton Brgoch and Julia Dyess each finished with 10 kills in the match. Brgoch, Vivian Miller and Sasha Ratliff were all extremely active at the net, each finishing with six blocks.
Evenly matched on defense, both teams went back and forth in the first set. Tied at 13, Texas A&M used a mini 4-0 run through the media break to go up 16-13 on the Rebels. Ratliff and Ole Miss answered, storming back to knot things back to take an 18-17 lead. Out of an Aggie timeout, a service error changed the momentum as A&M scored three unanswered points. Ole Miss nearly tied the set up late at 23, but the Aggies took care of business to grab the early lead.
Another close set followed in the second, with Texas A&M and Ole Miss deadlocked at 16. Looking for separation, the Aggies rattled off a 5-0 run to break things open. The Rebels burned both timeouts trying to slow down A&M but had no luck, dropping the set 25-20.
Needing to win a set to stay alive in the match, Ole Miss came out with a fire in the third. Brgoch, Dyess and Nia Washington helped the Rebels take the first five points, and the offense continued to pour it on, building up an eight-point lead at 13-5. The Aggies crept back within five, but Brgoch and the defense came alive, tallying six blocks in the set. Ole Miss cruised to a 25-16 set victory and extended the match.
Texas A&M quickly grabbed a 9-5 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. The lead only grew for the Aggies, who went on to win the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
Ole Miss looks to get back on track on Sunday, taking on No. 22 Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. CT in Lexington.
