Men’s Basketball Holds Off Strong Offensive Showing from Detroit Mercy in 70-69 Win

11/14/2023 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – A pair of free throws with 25 seconds left to play by Allen Flanigan put Ole Miss on top before a tough defensive play by TJ Caldwell secured the victory, as the Rebels picked up a 70-69 win over Detroit Mercy on Tuesday night in the SJB Pavilion.

One point shy of his career best, Jaylen Murray led Ole Miss (3-0) with 22 points while adding seven assists, with Matthew Murrell scoring 17 and dishing out six assists. The Rebels totaled 22 assists as a team, the most in just over two years, while only committing eight turnovers. Entering the night ranked No. 36 in the nation in assist to turnover ratio, Ole Miss now holds a season ratio of 2.13, which would rank No. 19 entering tonight's games.

Three pointers by Murray and Jaemyn Brakefield began the game for the Rebels, with Murrell sinking a pair of jump shots to give Ole Miss a quick 10-0 lead. Midway through the first quarter, the Titans (0-3) clawed back to get within three as Ole Miss led 15-12, taking the lead moments later 21-20. An alley-oop from Murrell to Jamarion Sharp and three-pointer from Murray put the Rebels back in control 30-24, eventually leading 34-31 at halftime.

Nine lead changes and seven ties occurred from the start of the second period to the 12-minute media timeout, with the foes locked in a 49-all draw with 11:43 to play. With just over five minutes left on the clock, Murray connected on his third make from beyond the arc to put Ole Miss on top 64-59, before Detroit Mercy responded with six-straight points to step out in front.

A three from Murrell put the Rebels up 67-65 with just over two minutes to go, before the visitors retaliated with a three. Each team would make one of two free throws to set the score at 69-68 in favor of the Titans, before Flanigan was sent to the free throw line on a strong drive with 25 seconds left. A pair of clutch shots set Ole Miss in front 70-69, as the Rebel defense shut down the comeback attempt on the final possession.

Detroit Mercy had three players score in double figures, with 22 from Jayden Stone, 19 from Marcus Tankersley, and 16 by Edoardo Del Cadia. As a team, the Titans shot 48.1% from the floor.

Ole Miss now turns their attention to the Throwback Game in the Tad Pad, where they'll host Sam Houston State at 8 p.m. in the Tad Smith Coliseum. The team will honor former Ole Miss head coach Rob Evans and each of his teams during his six seasons in Oxford.
