Sunday Notebook: Perfect at the Vaught
11/19/2023 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. – Coming off an emotional defeat at No. 1 Georgia, and with the Egg Bowl rivalry looming on Thursday, the No. 13 Ole Miss football team had to overcome a slow start Saturday against ULM, but Lane Kiffin's squad scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to secure a 35-3 win and close out a perfect 7-0 home record at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Ole Miss successfully locked the Vaught for the second time in three seasons, matching the undefeated 7-0 home record from 2021. The Rebels are 19-2 at home over the last three seasons and 21-2 over their last 23 games at the Vaught. Fans can donate $70 to support Rebel athletics in commemoration of the perfect 7-0 home record.
"Glad our guys finished the season undefeated at home. Really neat. A lot of special moments throughout the year here," Kiffin said. "Says a lot about these kids and where it's come. Our guys have played really well here."
Graves Danger
Through two drives, the ULM offense had netted negative five yards. Through three drives, the Warhawks still had just one yard of total offense—a sign of a dominant day to come for the Rebel defense, which held its opponent out of the end zone for the first time since their 42-0 win over Georgia Tech a season ago.
Ole Miss held ULM to just 66 passing yards, the second time the Rebel secondary has held an opponent under 100 yards passing this season, marking the first time they've done so twice since 2014.
Freshman Chris Graves was a big part of that, breaking up three passes on the day, the most by a Rebel in a single game this season, and all were key situational plays in the game. The first for the Fort Myers, Florida, native came on 3rd down and resulted in a 3-and-out. On the second, he put his body on the line to break up a 4th down pass in the end zone. The final PBU eventually led to a turnover on downs that kept the Warhawks out of the end zone on their final drive.
Each time, Graves left Rebel fans eager to see what he'll provide to the defensive backfield in the coming years.
Afterburner Bros
Dayton Wade found his way into the highlight reel per usual with a long touchdown reception, and he was joined in similar fashion by freshman Cayden Lee, as both Rebel receivers torched the ULM secondary after the catch on 50-plus yard TDs.
Wade's came from 58 yards, his fifth reception of 40-plus yards this season. After hauling in a Jaxson Dart pass near midfield, Wade outran the ULM defense and dove across the plane for his fourth touchdown of the season.
On the next drive, Lee caught a Spencer Sanders pass near midfield and followed strong blocks from Ayden Williams and Braylon Brown to find space down the left sideline. On just his second career reception, Lee high-stepped, broke through a would-be tackler and tight-roped his way into the end zone, giving him two career receptions and two career TDs—and giving the Rebels two 50-plus yard TD receptions in a game for the first time this season.
Prieskorn – Coming Undone
Caden Prieskorn hauled in his first touchdown pass as a Rebel in a coming out party for the senior tight end. In addition to his first TD, the Memphis transfer hauled in six receptions for 69 yards, both his best in an Ole Miss uniform.
Prieskorn made several tough catches throughout the day, but his score was about as easy as they come. The ULM defense sold out to stop Quinshon Judkins and cover Dayton Wade and forgot about the veteran tight end, who feigned a block and released freely into the right flat for six.
The stoic 24-year-old was happy to have his first touchdown at Ole Miss, but he was happier to see his team go 1-0 on the day.
"It felt good, but ultimately, the win is all that matters," Prieskorn said.
Next Up: The Egg Bowl
Ole Miss will have a quick turnaround after improving to 9-2 on the year. The Rebels are set for a Thanksgiving Day date with in-state rival Mississippi State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
The Rebels will look to reclaim the Egg Bowl after falling 24-22 to the Bulldogs in Oxford a season ago. MSU is 5-6 on the season after topping Southern Miss 41-20 this past weekend.
