OXFORD, Miss. – Head coach Bre Henry announced the addition of outside hitting Melia Johnson on Wednesday's National Signing Day as the newest member of Ole Miss volleyball.
Johnson, a 6-2 outside hitter, comes to Oxford from West Bend, Wisconsin, where she was a four-year letterwinner at Slinger High School. Over her career with the Owls, she recorded 686 kills and 746 digs in 227 sets played. With her club team, the Milwaukee Sting, Johnson served as the team captain in 2021 and 2022. She helped guide MKE Sting to a third place finish in the 17U National Division at the USA Volleyball 2023 Girls Junior National Championship.
This past year, Johnson had her most productive season, helping lead Slinger to a 19-12 record and a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play. She tallied 321 kills on 686 swings, registering a .290 hitting percentage. On defense she racked up 317 digs and 29 blocks. Johnson and the Owls finished the season as North Shore Conference Champions and Regional Champs. Individually, she was named conference player of the year while also earning a spot on the first team.
As a junior, Johnson recorded 102 kills and 179 digs, earning a second team all-conference nod. She had 160 kills and 142 digs as a sophomore, collecting North Shore Conference first team honors. Following her sophomore season, she received an invite to the summer, fall and winter USA Volleyball National Team Development Program series, where she trained with the top 25-30 athletes in her region. Johnson garnered 2020 honorable mention all-state honors as a freshman after finishing with 101 kills and 108 digs.
Melia is the daughter of Lisa Disch Johnson and Scott Johnson. Her father, Scott, played basketball at Milwaukee from 1986-1990 and was a member of the university's first D1 volleyball team in 1991. She has two siblings, Maddi and Mitch.
"I chose Ole Miss because it was the first place I felt at home," said Johnson. "Everyone always told me 'You will just know and have a feeling about a school if it's for you,' and I never knew what they meant until I visited Ole Miss. I love the coaches and how genuine they are. They are building a great program with a great culture."
