OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's tennis and head coach Toby Hansson have announced the addition of its second signee to the 2024 freshman class on Tuesday with five-star recruit Carson Baker joining the Rebels in January.
"We are looking forward to having Carson join our team in January," head coach Hansson said. "I can really sense the excitement that Carson has to get the opportunity to represent Ole Miss and to compete with the best in the country. He is a player that wants to reach his fullest potential and I am confident that Ole Miss can help him along that path. We can't wait to get the season started."
The Charleston, S.C., native arrives in the 'Sip with a 36-20 singles record and a 18-16 doubles record in International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments. Baker has proved to be a tough competitor as he has ranked as high as No. 254 in the ITF Junior Rankings.
The newest Rebel found success early in his career moving to the top of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) rankings chart when he earned the No. 1 spot in boys' 14U in both singles and doubles competition. He also later found himself in the top-10 of the best 16-year old's in the country and won five USTA National Balls.
Baker currently has an impressive three ITF titles under his belt, all coming from within the past two years. He secured his first title at the J4 Santa Tecla tournament in El Salvador, winning five straight matches in the summer of 2022.
The South Carolina native will also prove to be a significant contributor in Ole Miss' doubles competition. Baker garnered two doubles titles across his amateur career, earning one at the J4 Pereira tournament in Colombia and another at the J100 San Jose competition in Costa Rica.
Most recently, Baker earned his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) point in doubles after competing at the M15 Sharm in Egypt.
"I am super excited to be a part of Ole Miss," Baker said. "Coach Hansson has developed a program that gives players the opportunity to train and play at a professional level. Ole Miss is a great fit for me and I am looking forward to this season coming up!"
Baker and the rest of the Rebel squad will host Jackson State and North Alabama in a double header on Jan. 15 to kick off their spring season.
