Peach Buzz: Ole Miss Earns Fourth NY6 Bowl Bid

OXFORD, Miss. – The rich bowl history of the Ole Miss football program continued in 2023 as Lane Kiffin and the No. 11 Rebels earned a New Year's Six bowl bid once again, securing a date with No. 10 Penn State on Dec. 30 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Ole Miss will make its fourth NY6 appearance in the College Football Playoff era, tied for the eighth-most in FBS and the third-most in the SEC behind only Alabama and Georgia.

Kiffin met with the media Sunday night after the announcement. The Rebel head coach was on the recruiting trail when the bowl slate was announced, and he was glad to have his second NY6 appearance in the last three seasons as a selling point on the road.

"I think it does matter. As I said, we're in all day today and after this announcement in recruiting meetings with kids and families. That's pretty neat to say, two of the last three years, to be in New Year's Six bowls," Kiffin said. "Obviously we have a goal to do better this time around and finish off and have the first 11-win season in the history of the school.  Any time your players are having success on the field and doing well helps you in recruiting."

The Rebels have been a bowl every season under Kiffin: the 2021 Outback Bowl, the 2022 Sugar Bowl, the 2022 Texas Bowl, and now, the 2023 Peach Bowl.

Ole Miss earned a Sugar Bowl berth in 2021-22, matching this year's program-best 10-2 mark in the regular season. The Rebels fell 21-7 to No. 7 Baylor as starting quarterback Matt Corral went down with an early injury. Without Corral, Ole Miss couldn't overcome an elite Baylor defense in the defeat.

Ole Miss' first two NY6 berths came prior to Kiffin's arrival: a 2014 Peach Bowl loss to TCU and a 2016 Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma State.

Ole Miss' all-time bowl record stands at 24-15, excluding a vacated victory in the 2013 BBVA Compass Bowl. The Rebels lead the SEC and rank third in the NCAA in bowl win percentage at .632. Elsewhere in the bowl record book, Ole Miss is 15th nationally in bowl wins (24) and 20th in bowl appearances (41).

Ole Miss is 12-3 in its last 15 bowl games, including a streak of six straight victories from 2002 to 2013.

This will mark Ole Miss' third appearance in the Peach Bowl, having faced Georgia Tech in 1971 and then TCU in 2014. Ole Miss won its first appearance in the bowl as quarterback Norris Weese and linebacker Crowell Armstrong earned MVP honors in the 41-18 win over the Yellow Jackets.
