Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan Notched Best Throw by a Freshman Nationally Since 2017
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan further cemented himself as one of the top throwers in the nation, the Rebel distance crew put together a fast night, and the Rebel sprinters shined at a busy first day of split action for Ole Miss track & field at Vanderbilt and Arkansas on Friday night.
Ole Miss was split two ways on Friday, with the distance and throws squads at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge, while the jumpers, pole vaulters and sprinters headed back to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational.
The Rebels came away with several spectacular performances from the first day of competition at Vanderbilt, but chief among them was the best outing yet from star freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in the weight throw. The Rebel newcomer dismantled his own school record four times on Friday night, and nearly had a fifth, in an unreal field series that ended with his newest record – a behemoth heave of 23.05m/75-07.50 that broke his old record by nearly three feet.
That mark by Robinson-O'Hagan moved him to No. 2 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the SEC this year – as well as No. 6 worldwide and No. 5 among Americans. Nationally he now only trails Kennesaw State senior Isaiah Rogers' 24.37m/79-11.50. Rogers – who is also the current world leader – was in competition at Vanderbilt on Friday, finishing third ahead of Robinson-O'Hagan but behind two professionals at 23.69m/77-08.75.
Historically, Robinson-O'Hagan's exploits on Friday put him into the upper echelon of freshman throwers over the past decade. His latest PR is only the fourth 23-meter throw by a freshman since 2010, trailing only a throw by Kansas' Gleb Dudarev that went 23.44m/76-11 on Feb. 11, 2017, and a 23.19m/76-1 toss by Princeton's Conor McCullough on Feb. 11, 2012. It also ranks ahead of the only other 23-meter throw since 2010, a 23.00m/75-05.50 effort by Dudarev on Jan. 28, 2017.
Combined with his prowess in the shot put at 19.73m/64-08.75, Robinson-O'Hagan currently stands as the lone thrower in the world at 64 feet in the shot put and 75 feet in the weight throw.
Another school record came tumbling down at Vanderbilt on Friday night, courtesy of senior Skylar Boogerd in her 2023 season debut. Boogerd shattered her own indoor 5K record by 11 seconds at 16:00.28, just barely missing out on becoming the first Rebel woman to break 16 minutes indoors. Boogerd set the previous record of 16:11.04 on the same track almost exactly one year ago today on Feb. 11, 2022 at the Music City Challenge.
Boogerd turned on the jets late in her record-breaking run, clocking a 4:42.30 final 1600 and a 49.60 final 300-meter lap on Vanderbilt's oversized track. This year, that time puts Boogerd at No. 26 in the NCAA and No. 5 in the SEC on the lists entering this weekend. Boogerd also owns the Ole Miss outdoor 5K record at 15:54.46, the first sub-16 ever by a Rebel woman.
In the men's mile, the senior duo of Anthony Camerieri and Shane Bracken broke the four-minute barrier yet again after doing so last month on the same track. Camerieri finished third overall at a new PR of 3:56.90, his second straight sub-four after having never done so prior to Jan. 21. Bracken, meanwhile, clocked his fifth sub-four mile in a row and the sixth in his last seven tries as a Rebel at 3:57.07. The pair now lead the SEC in the mile while also ranking fourth and fifth in Ole Miss history, respectively.
Senior Loral Winn led a pack of career-best performances over in the women's mile, chopping three seconds off her previous PR to finish second overall at 4:36.07 – No. 2 in Ole Miss history and No. 3 in the SEC this season. Senior Kristel van den Berg (seventh, 4:40.90), freshman Sophie Baumann (eighth, 4:41.82) and senior Jocelyn Long (22nd, 4:48.11) all joined Winn on the all-time Ole Miss list, ranking No. 3, No. 4 and No. 12, respectively.
Over at Arkansas' Tyson Invitational, a strong night from the Rebel sprinters led the way on a busy first day. Senior McKenzie Long – fresh off a win in the 60-meter dash at Arkansas two weeks ago – tied her PR amidst a blistering women's 60-meter final on Friday, finishing fourth at 7.27. That time ties her previous best set in the prelim at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 28, the second-fastest in Ole Miss history.
In the men's 60-meter dash, senior Keith Robinson notched multiple PRs after taking the long way to the final. Robinson had to run three times on Friday, first running a PR 6.73 in qualifying, again besting himself in the prelim at 6.71, before finishing eighth in the final at a solid 6.76. His 6.71 in the second round makes him the No. 6 performer in school history, as well as the fastest Rebel in the men's 60-meter dash since Jalen Miller set the school record 6.54 at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Senior Jaiden Paris ran an Ole Miss career-best in the 60-meter hurdles qualifying, clocking in at 8.36 to give her sole possession of No. 3 in school history. Junior Jerricka Ambus missed out on advancing to the next round by four thousandths of a second after running an Ole Miss career-best 8.42 – putting her into a tie for No. 5 in school history.
Ole Miss will return to split action on Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT with the women's 3K at Vanderbilt and the men's pole vault at 10:30 a.m. at Arkansas. Also competing on Saturday are senior Tiarnan Crorken (mile) and freshman Cade Flatt (800-meter), who will run in New York City at the 115th running of the historic Millrose Games. Crorken and Flatt will join professional Rebel runners Mario Garcia Romo (men's Wanamaker Mile) and Sintayehu Vissa (women's Wanamaker Mile) in the Big Apple, with action airing live on NBC beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
