Men’s Golf in 2nd Place After First Round of Cabo Collegiate

3/5/2023 | Men's Golf

LOS CABOS, Mexico – The first 18 holes of the Cabo Collegiate proved to be successful for the Ole Miss men's golf team, as it sits in 2nd place at even par. Among the 13 top 50 teams in the field, No. 44 Ole Miss reigns over 10 ranked squads after day one on the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.

Ole Miss led the field in par-4 scoring (-2) and were second in the field in birdies, chipping in 19 birdies throughout play.

Veteran Sarut Vongchaisit and freshman Patton Samuels lead hand-in-hand for the Rebels as both sit high in the leaderboards tied for 4th at 1-under overall. Vongchaisit made four birdies throughout his 18 holes, while Samuels put in three to give him his 70 round-score.

"I'm really proud of the start we got off to today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Our guys really battled on a tough golf course and set up to have a good first round. Anytime you can have two freshmen lead the way is encouraging as a coach. We need to make sure that we have the same mindset and attack this course like they did today."

Teeing off on Hole 8 with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start, Vongchaisit started out the morning with a bogey but bounced back with a 2-under back-nine to climb him up the leaderboard. At the turn, the Bangkok, Thailand, native put in an additional birdie to give him the top-5 ranking after Round 1.

Samuels played overall even golf, going even-par for 13 holes. His back-to-back birdies on Holes 2 and 3 launched him up the leaderboard as he finished 1-under and tied for 4th with his Rebel teammate.

Not far behind after the first round is freshman Cameron Tankersley, who ended the day at even par. The Dickson, Tennessee, native put in four birdies in his first 18 holes, but fell with a double-bogey on his final hole of the day to falter his momentum. Tankersley looks to day two to continue his climb up the rankings with a tied for 11th placement.

Hugo Townsend started out his round on a high note with a birdie, but couldn't keep his momentum steady. The grad transfer is tied for 25th at 2-over after Round 1 of the Cabo Collegiate.

Brett Schell began his round with a birdie on his first hole of the day and followed with two additional birdies through his next six holes. However, Schell lost his momentum heading into the front-nine and rounds out the scoring for Ole Miss at tied for 48th.

Ole Miss will tee off for Round 2 of the Cabo Collegiate at 9:00 a.m. CT tomorrow morning, March 5. The Rebels will be paired with Vanderbilt and Baylor to begin day two on the Twin Dolphin Club.
