Women’s Tennis Tops No. 58 Kentucky for First SEC Win
3/5/2023 | Women's Tennis
Gabrielsen and Kareisova Lead Rebels to Victory
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women's tennis won their first SEC match of the season, sweeping No. 58 Kentucky, 4-0. It's the Rebels first ranked dual win of the season.
Ole Miss (7-3, 1-1 SEC) took the early advantage in doubles play over Kentucky (6-4, 1-1 SEC). Lillian Gabrielsen and Kelsey Mize rolled through their opponents with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats fought back, evening the score at No. 3 doubles.
Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher and Ludmila Kareisova got the job done at the top spot, taking down the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team 6-3. Ole Miss is 6-1 when they win the doubles point.
"I was proud of us for coming back in doubles," Coach Beyers said. "We we're down at No. 1 doubles and came back. Had a good solid performance at two which after Firday I'm proud of those guys for turning that around. "
The Rebels excelled in singles play, losing just one set out of nine sets completed. Kareisova performed strongly in the two spot, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. She holds the longest singles win streak on the team, with four straight.
Gabrielsen finished her match quickly after Kareisova, outscoring her opponent 6-2 in both sets. The senior from Norway, with her 12th win of the season, set up the freshman to seal the match.
Coming off her first dual singles career loss, Emma Kette bounced back with a straight-set victory at the fourth position. The Rammelsbach, Germany native, won the match by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
"Singles was excellent. Some of these matches, I feel like it was pretty routine," Beyers said. "We played good tennis and didn't give them a whole lot to build on. "
The Rebels hit the road for a four-match road stretch, starting with Auburn on Friday, March 10. The match is set for 3 p.m. CT.
