Four Rebels in Top 20 After 36 Holes
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Ole Miss men's golf wrapped day two of the Cabo Collegiate after a 282 (-2) second-round score to put the Rebels in 2nd place at 2-under overall. Four Rebels sit in the top 20 and look to the final round to continue their success.
Sarut Vongchaisit (T5), Patton Samuels (T8), Cameron Tankersley (T18), and Brett Schell (T18) all lead for Ole Miss on the leaderboard. Overall, Ole Miss is second in the field in par-4 (-1) and par-5 scoring (-13). The Rebels have chipped in 37 birdies and made par on 108 holes thus far on the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.
"Our guys really hung in there and stayed patient today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "This course is very demanding and it truly is a championship setup that exposes any weakness you may have. There were a few shots down the stretch that we wish that we could have back but that's golf. I know these guys will be ready to finish strong tomorrow."
Vongchaisit had another steady round of golf for his second day in a row. Vongchaisit started his round off with a bogey on his first hole of the day but quickly responded with back-to-back birdies on Holes 2 and 3. The Bangkok, Thailand, native ended his second round with a score of 70 (-1) to put him tied for 5th place at 2-under overall and 4-strokes behind the lead.
Samuels, proving not to be holding anything back in his freshman campaign, secured a bogey-free front-nine while snagging two birdies to begin his second round at 2-under. The back-nine brought some struggle for the rookie, but he maintained an even par round score to give him his tied for 8th placement at 1-under overall.
Schell had a standout round for the Rebels, coming back from his 5-over first-round score and rising 30 spots on the leaderboard with a 68 (-3) round score. The junior made five birdies through his 18 holes of the day and obtained a bogey-free, 4-under back-nine to launch him up the rankings. Schell, tied for 18th, is shooting 2-over overall heading into the final round of the Cabo Collegiate.
Tankersley, another standout freshman leading for the Rebels, grabbed a bogey-free front-nine to begin his second round on a high note. At the turn, the freshman faltered his drive but still remains in the top 20 with a 2-over overall score after 36 holes.
Rounding out for Ole Miss, Hugo Townsend shot for 2-over for the day to put him at 4-over overall and tied for 31st going into Round 3.
Ole Miss will tee off for the final round of the Cabo Collegiate at 9:00 a.m. CT tomorrow morning, March 7. The Rebels will be paired with Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, and Arizona State to begin the final day on the Twin Dolphin Club.
