Rebels Now Turn Their Attention to NCAA Regionals, Set to Tee Off May 15

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 6 seed Ole Miss men's golf team saw its SEC Championship run end on Saturday, as the Rebels fell 4-1 to No. 3 seed Florida in the Match Play Quarterfinals.

A match decided by the final few holes, Florida was able to come up with the win against the Ole Miss. The match was overall tied through the front nine with Sarut Vongchaisit carrying a comfortable lead against his opponent. At 12 holes, the momentum shifted in Ole Miss's favor with three Rebels leading. However, Florida responded by winning the final holes to give the Gators the win.

"I'm proud of the fight our guys showed all week long. Although it ultimately didn't go our way today, these guys fought to the end of each of their matches and gave us a chance to win," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Give credit to Florida, they made putts down the stretch and did what it took to win. We will be better for having the experience that we did over the last couple of days. Now we have a chance to get back and prepare for the NCAA tournament."

Beginning on Hole 10, Vongchaisit started his round against Florida's J. DuBois with the first four holes remaining in a steady tie. However, the following three holes Vongchaisit took off and created a 3-up lead to carry out the back nine. At the turn, the senior kept it coming and furthered his lead by 6 to win his match 6&5.

Patton Samuels, facing off against F. Biondi of Florida, was down by two holes at the turn. Beginning in the front nine, Samuels capitalized on Holes 1 and 2 to bring the match back to a tie. Unfortunately, the freshman couldn't hold on to the momentum and fell 2&1 to his Gator opponent.

Brett Schell went back and forth with Florida's M. Kress all through the front nine, never letting Kress get more than a 2-up lead on the junior. At the turn, Schell won Holes 2 and 3 to give him his first lead of the day. However, Kress did not let up and won Holes 7 and 8 to take back the match 2&1 to Florida.

Hugo Townsend carried the lead for the majority of his match against R. Castillo of Florida. Townsend won back-to-back holes on No. 11 and 12 to give him a 1-up lead and then capitalized again on No. 15 to put up at 2-up. Castillo put the match back at a tie at the turn, but Townsend responded quickly by winning Hole 3 to put him back up. Castillo, battling against the Rebel, tied the match once again and took his first lead of the match on Hole 7. That was enough as his Gator opponents had clinched their matches to give Castillo the overall win 1-up.

Cameron Tankersley faced off against Florida's Y. Lin in his debut of the SEC Quarterfinals. Tankersley remained tie with the Gator through the first six holes of his match. Lin took a 1-up lead on the freshman at the turn, but Tankersley was unable to capitalize to bring the match back in his favor, falling 3&2.

The Rebels will wait to learn their postseason fate with the NCAA Selection Show. It is there that the team will learn what NCAA Regional they will be traveling to May 15-17.
