McKenzie Long Won First 200-Meter Title in Women’s Program History
BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss women's track & field proved its worth in the best conference in the country yet again, as the Rebels finished a women's program record fourth overall to close out an excellent stay at the 2023 SEC Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
The 10th-ranked Rebel women finished with 73.5 total meet points, which was good for fourth behind No. 3 Arkansas (134), No. 2 Florida (112) and No. 7 Texas A&M (86), as well as ahead of other top-10 teams No. 8 Georgia (sixth, 57), No. 6 LSU (seventh, 53) and No. 9 Kentucky (tied for eighth, 50). Almost half of Ole Miss' points came from spectacular seniors McKenzie Long (17.25) and Jalani Davis (16), who by themselves combined for 33.25 points.
The fourth-place finish today breaks the previous record of fifth set by the Rebel women back in 2018, and it ties for the best overall in the history of the women's program. Under eighth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, Ole Miss has now either tied or set SEC record finishes twice on the women's side outdoors (fourth, 2023; fifth, 2018), three times indoors (fourth, 2023; fifth, 2022; fifth, 2017), as well as twice for the Rebel men indoors (third, 2017; third, 2016).
The Rebel men, meanwhile, had a strong meet of their own, finishing tied for seventh with No. 4 Alabama at 58 meet points.
"I am really proud of our athletes and coaches for a job well done," Price-Smith said. "There were a lot of great things that happened for us all week here in Baton Rouge, and it speaks to all the hard work they've put in. This was a complete team effort for both our women and men."
McKenzie Long caught the track world by storm after a shocking indoor season, followed by a stupefying performance at the Texas Relays to open her outdoor season back in March. She entered among the favorites in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes – as well as a crucial component of the Ole Miss 4x100-meter relay squad – and Long proved she belongs among the elite with an incredible workhorse performance on Saturday.
Long came away as the SEC Champion in the women's 200-meter dash, edging out Tennessee's Jacious Sears by six hundredths of a second at the line, winning 22.39 to Sears' 22.45 at a completely still 0.0 meters per second wind-reading. That time was just off her career-best 22.31 (+1.8) from last month but was good enough to make her the first Rebel woman to ever win an SEC title in the 200-meter dash – indoors or outdoors.
Overall, Long is just the third Rebel to ever win an SEC Outdoor title in the 200-meter dash, now standing alongside Olympians Isiah Young (2012, '13) and Tony Dees (1984) from the men's side.
Less than an hour earlier, Long battled in a contentious 100-meter dash final. Long was the bronze medal winner at 11.04 (+0.9), just barely losing a tiebreaker for silver by three thousandths of a second to Georgia's Kaila Jackson, 11.032 to 11.035. Long's bronze medal finish stands as the second-best ever by a Rebel woman in the 100-meter dash, trailing only a silver by All-American Teneeshia Jones in 2000.
And just more than an hour prior to that, Long ran the leadoff leg on a school-record performance from the Ole Miss women's 4x100-meter relay squad. Long, freshman Gabrielle Matthews, and seniors Jayda Eckford and Ariyonna Augustine crossed the line in 43.43 to break the 2019 record of 43.45 and finish fourth in the race. Long capped off the night running the second leg on Ole Miss' 4x400-meter relay that ran the 10th-fastest time in school history at 3:37.65.
Other scorers for the Rebel women on Saturday included senior Loral Winn in the 1500-meter final (fourth, 4:19.87), senior Tedreauna Britt in the discus (seventh, 54.08m/177-05) and senior Sara Van Aken in the high jump (tied for eighth, 1.71m/5-07.25).
The Ole Miss men received a big point haul in the men's 1500-meter final on Saturday, led by senior and silver medalist Shane Bracken. The Irish native used a savvy move right before the finish line to position himself ahead of Arkansas' Elias Schreml by one hundredth of a second for the silver medal at 3:43.79. Bracken is the eighth Rebel all-time to ever finish within the top-two of the SEC men's 1500-meter, all since 2014.
Fellow seniors Anthony Camerieri (fourth, 3:44.68) and Dalton Hengst (seventh, 3:46.16) packed a punch with scoring performances of their own, giving Ole Miss 15 total points from the 1500 alone.
Ole Miss got a similar big batch in the men's 800-meter final, where seniors Tiarnan Crorken and Baylor Franklin combined for 11 meet points for the Rebels. Crorken took the bronze medal at 1:47.65, with Franklin right behind him in fourth at 1:47.95.
Senior Noah Mumme put on a show in the men's pole vault competition, clearing an overall career-best 5.35m/17-06.50 to finish fourth overall. That final height puts him into a tie for No. 3 in Ole Miss history, and he soared to it in spectacular fashion, remaining clean over his first five attempted heights.
Also scoring for the Rebel men on Saturday was Cole Bullock in the 5K, where he finished eighth at 14:23.64.
Up next, the Rebel athletes who are qualified and declared will travel to the University of North Florida for the NCAA East Regional, held May 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida.
