Rebel Men and Women Dominate Team Races
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country came away with two dominant team victories following a great morning of racing at the 2023 Southern Showcase on Friday.
The Rebel men opened the day with a 42-point victory over Auburn in the 8K, with the Ole Miss women following that up with a 37-point edge of their own over runner-up Auburn in the 5K. Key in both Rebel victories were ranked wins over Alabama, who entered No. 23 in men's competition and No. 13 in women's.
In the 8K, it was all Rebels from wire-to-wire, as Ole Miss claimed the team crown on the backs of five top-13 finishes and a scoring spread of 1:01 – including four in the top-10 that featured three key additions this offseason. Leading the way was junior Wisconsin transfer Jack Meijer, who finished fifth overall and within three seconds of his PR at 23:43.50. All-American Rebel senior Cole Bullock had a strong debut in sixth place at 23:43.60, tied with sophomore Saint Louis transfer Toby Gillen at the same exact time that registered as a whopping 72-second best for Gillen.
Texas transfer and senior Cruz Gomez was next in eighth at a 20-second personal best of 23:45.90, and rounding out the scoring was junior Aiden Britt in 13th place at 24:04.40.
Also running for the Rebel men on Friday were junior Chase Rose in 34th place (24:40.40, PR), sophomore Gabe Scales in 40th place (24:44.90, PR) and redshirt freshman Landen McNair in 57th place (24:59.80).
The Rebel women followed that up with a lightning-quick series of 5K races, notching a scoring spread of just 40 seconds as 10 Ole Miss runners set new 5K bests. Senior Skylar Boogerd returned to the site of her victory at the 2021 North Alabama Showcase and had a similarly strong outing on Friday, finishing third overall to lead the Ole Miss women at a 5K time of 16:46.20.
Fellow senior and reigning SEC Outdoor steeplechase champion Kristel van den Berg, back for her final season of competition as a Rebel, was ninth overall at a 16-second PR of 16:57.80. Senior Loral Winn was next in 11th at a PR of 16:59.80, and was followed by two big improvements from sophomore Sarah Schiffmann in 13th place at a 48-second PR of 17:05.90, and junior Hannah Ielfield in 14th at a 23-second best of 17:10.70.
Other Rebel women in the standings on Friday were sophomore Sophie Baumann in 21st (17:26.50, PR), junior Beth Arentz in 23rd (17:27.40, PR), junior Jo-Lauren Keane in 39th (17:46.60), sophomore Frances Luna in 49th (17:56.00, PR), freshman Adie Luna in 51st (17:56.60, PR), freshman Ella Rodwell in 68th (18:13.00, PR), sophomore Samantha Ouellette in 87th (18:33.90, PR) and freshman Brooke Preputnick in 123rd (19:00.70, PR).
Ole Miss now has a week off to prepare for a trip to Chicago on Sept. 29 at Loyola's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational.
