Rebels in Fourth After First Round of Competition
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss men's golf hit the ground running for the first round of the 2023-24 season, putting in a three-under (277) score on day one of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate.
Leading for the Rebels is sophomore Tom Fischer, who captured a career-low round of 65 on the Tennessee National Course. Fischer currently is tied for the lead in birdies with a standout number of seven for the day. The Birmingham, Alabama, native came out the gate, securing a bogey-free front nine while adding five birdies in the mix. Fischer went on to add two additional birdies on the back-nine to give him the 1st place advantage. The sophomore's 5-under round leads the 84-man field as he looks to continue his hot streak heading into round two.
"All in all, it was a solid start for our guys," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We had some silly mistakes which is to be expected in our first round of the year. However, I was overly impressed with the way that they bounced back after each mistake. Tomorrow is a new day and we need to get some momentum early."
"Tom's round was huge for us today," Malloy went on. "All he has needed over the last few months is a little confidence and I'd say he sure got some today."
Overall, Ole Miss snagged 16 birdies of the day. The Rebels thrived on the par 5s with a 5-under score and shot for par on 57 holes.
Michael La Sasso concluded his first round in a Rebel uniform with an even-par score. The sophomore started out hot, grabbing a bogey-free front nine with a pair of back-to-back birdies on Holes 5 and 6. La Sasso secured an additional consecutive set of birdies in the back nine, but fell on his final four holes. La Sasso sits tied for 20th going into the second day of competition.
Tied for 28th is Cameron Tankersley and Tim Tillmanns. Both Rebels made two birdies for the day with a 1-over first round score.
Rounding out scoring for the Rebels are Patton Samuels and Kye Meeks as Samuels sits tied for 50th and Meeks tied for 59th.
Ole Miss' second round from Rocky Top is set to tee off beginning at 7:00 a.m. CT tomorrow morning on Hole 1.
