Men’s Basketball Drops Road Game at LSU 89-80
1/17/2024 | Men's Basketball
BATON ROUGE, La. – The clock ran out on a late comeback attempt by the No. 21 Ole Miss men's basketball team, as they fell 89-80 to LSU in the Maravich Assembly Center on Wednesday evening.
Aggressive play from the Rebels (15-2, 2-2 SEC) helped them get to the free throw line 29 total times in the contest, as they connected on 26 of those shots. Jaemyn Brakefield and Allen Flanigan each went a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe, a feat not accomplished since 2020.
A pair of threes from Jaylen Murray helped Ole Miss take a quick lead, 9-3. While the Rebels remained in front for a majority of the first period, the Tigers (11-6, 3-1 SEC) drew the score even at 24-all with just eight minutes before the midway break. Jaylen Murray responded to a dunk by LSU in the final minutes, before a three-pointer from the home team gave them a two-point lead at halftime.
LSU extended their lead to begin the second period, eventually taking the game's first 10-point lead just before the 12-minute media timeout.
Down by 15 with just over three minutes left to play, a 10-0 run by Ole Miss fueled by Brakefield and Allen Flanigan made it a 75-72 game with 1:41 on the clock. A 20-21 effort from the charity stripe in the second half wasn't enough for the Rebels to leave Baton Rouge with a win.
For the fifth time this season, Ole Miss had two players score 20 points or more. Jaylen Murray led the charge with 23 points for the Rebels, while Flanigan added 20, the fifth 20-point game for each of them this year. Brakefield led the team in rebounding with nine while scoring 13.
On the defensive end, Jaylen Murray and Flanigan each recorded three steals, as Moussa Cisse blocked a trio of LSU shots.
Jordan Wright led LSU in scoring with 27 points, with Jalen Cook scoring 16.
The Rebels will remain on the road and face the other Tigers of the SEC, as they travel to Alabama to take on No. 11 Auburn on Saturday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.
