1/20/2024 | Men's Basketball
AUBURN, Ala. – Playing in a tough road environment, the No. 21 Ole Miss men's basketball team dropped an 82-59 game at No. 11 Auburn on Saturday night in Neville Arena.
Each team shined offensively to begin the game, with Matthew Murrell scoring first. The Rebels (15-3, 2-3 SEC) and Tigers (16-2, 5-0 SEC) drew even at nine points, but it was the home team that led at the first media timeout 13-9. While Auburn pushed their lead to 10 with just over eight minutes before the half, a fastbreak bucket from Jaemyn Brakefield minutes later cut the Ole Miss deficit to six, at 27-21.
The shots continued to fall for the Tigers, however, as the Rebels trailed 46-27 entering the locker room at halftime.
The home team extended their lead in the second half, before Ole Miss used a 17-2 run late to set the score at 77-57 with about two minutes left.
For the fifth time this season, the Ole Miss defense grabbed 10 steals in a game, led by Matthew Murrell with three. The senior guard entered tonight's game in the top-50 nationally in steals and steals per game.
Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams led Auburn in scoring with 13 points each.
Ole Miss returns home for their next game, hosting Arkansas in the SJB Pavilion on Wednesday, January 24 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
