Track & Field Wins Two Titles to Open Razorback Invitational

1/26/2024 | Track and Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field received two victorious performances from the men's squad to pace the Rebels at Day One of the Razorback Invitational on Friday.

All-American sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan continued his dominant streak in the men's weight throw, winning Friday night by three feet on his fifth-round heave of 22.50m/73-10. Dating back to his superb freshman campaign in 2023, Robinson-O'Hagan has now won five of six total regular season weight throw competitions, including a 2-0 start to the 2024 season. Robinson-O'Hagan is coming off a 2023 season that saw him set the collegiate freshman record at 23.62m/77-6, and he currently ranks No. 2 nationally in 2024 at his season-opening 23.12m/75-10.25.

Redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel had another excellent outing as well, finishing seventh at 20.38m/66-10.75 to improve upon his spot at No. 6 in Ole Miss history. At Vanderbilt two weeks ago, Hickel set a new PR on all four of his legal attempts. Junior San Jose State transfer and mid-year enrollee Bryson Smith had a great Rebel debut on Friday as well, finishing ninth on a two-foot PR of 19.70m/64-07.75 to move into No. 8 all-time at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss' other win on Friday came courtesy of redshirt sophomore Aiden Britt in the men's 3K. Britt sat in second place at the bell, but his kick over the final 200 meters pushed him ahead of Iowa State's Ryan Watts to win at a PR time of 8:03.80 – moving him to No. 14 on the Ole Miss all-time list.

Over in the women's weight throw, the All-American senior duo of Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell took care of business yet again, finishing as the top two collegians following strong performances. Davis, the reigning NCAA Champion, was the runner-up at 23.79m/78-00.75 to former Rebel and professional thrower Janeah Stewart, who won at 23.90m/78-5. Mitchell wasn't far off in third place, throwing five centimeters shy of Davis at 23.74m/77-10.75.

Mitchell still holds the world lead at her season-opening 24.16m/79-03.25, and combined with Davis' opening 24.06m/78-11.25, the pair still hold the NCAA lead at the moment as well. Davis eclipsed the 23-meter plateau once tonight and Mitchell did so twice, improving upon their place on the all-time collegiate list of career 23-meter throws. Mitchell ranks second all-time with 19 behind record holder and former Ole Miss NCAA Champion Shey Taiwo (21), while Davis ranks fourth with 15.

Freshman Skylar Soli put together an excellent showing of her own, finishing seventh at 20.08m/65-10.50 in her first collegiate weight throw competition. That mark already puts her No. 9 in Ole Miss history.

In the men's high jump, sophomore Arvesta Troupe had a career day, finishing sixth at an overall PR of 2.12m/6-11.50. Troupe sailed clean over his first bar at 2.02m/6-07.50 before passing his next height at 2.07m/6-09.50. The gamble paid off, as Troupe got over that next bar of 2.12m/6-11.50 on his second attempt – moving him up to No. 8 all-time at Ole Miss in the process.

All-American senior McKenzie Long made her indoor 200-meter debut on Friday night, clocking her fastest-ever season open in the event indoors at 23.10 to finish seventh overall. Long is also scheduled to run in the 60-meter dash on Saturday, where she will defend her crown after winning at the 2023 edition of the Razorback Invitational.

Other Rebels with impressive performances on Friday included redshirt freshman Landen McNair in the men's mile (second, 4:09.04, PR), junior Kayla Jemison in the women's high jump (sixth, 1.67m/5-05.75, PR), freshman Aly Francolini in the women's pole vault (tied for 14th, 3.83m/12-06.75, PR, No. 11 Ole Miss history) and sophomore Laurel Fulcher in the women's pentathlon (20th, 3,316 points, PR, No. 15 Ole Miss history).

Competition begins for Ole Miss on Saturday with the resumption of the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m. CT and the qualifying round of the women's 60-meter dash at 10:15 a.m. CT.
