Football at South Carolina: Series Snapshot

10/1/2024 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 11 Ole Miss football team is set for its first Southeastern Conference road test this weekend against South Carolina.

We've taken a look at the series history between the Rebels and Gamecocks, including Ole Miss' win in the lone meeting of the Lane Kiffin era in this week's series snapshot.

Series Snapshot
Ole Miss and South Carolina will meet for the 18th time this weekend in Columbia, where the Rebels will look to extend their 9-8 all-time lead in the series. The two teams first met in 1947 in Memphis, a 33-0 win for the Rebels. South Carolina largely controlled the series in the 1970s to lead the series 5-3 before Ole Miss reeled off five straight wins between 1981-2004. South Carolina won the next three before the Rebels won the latest meeting 2020.

Series in Columbia
Ole Miss and South Carolina have met four times in Columbia to an even 4-4 split. South Carolina won the last meeting in Columbia in 2009, snapping a three-game win streak for the Rebels on the road in the series.

Last Meeting
Just one of Ole Miss and South Carolina's meetings have taken place in the Lane Kiffin era, and it brought one of the series' wildest shootouts. The teams combined to break the century mark on the scoreboard with 101 total points scored, 58 first downs and 1,256 total yards—708 for the Rebels and 548 for the Gamecocks. Ole Miss scored the last 21 points of the back-and-forth affair to win 59-42.

Last Meeting in Columbia
Ole Miss last went to Columbia in 2009, bringing a No. 4 ranking to Williams-Brice Stadium and leaving with a 16-10 defeat. It was a forgettable day for the Rebels, who scored their first touchdown of the game on a Jevan Snead pass to Markeith Summers in the fourth quarter. It was an unforgettable day for South Carolina fans, as the monumental win on national television marked the birth and emergence of the Sandstorm tradition.

Looking Close
If history is any indicator, this one will be close. Thirteen of the last 15 meetings between the two teams have been decided by seven points or less, including six decided by a field goal or less. The Gamecocks have won eight of the 17 games in the series, but never by more than seven points.
