Football Practice Report: Week 10

10/30/2024 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – Yet another tough SEC test awaits No. 18 Ole Miss football this week as Lane Kiffin and the Rebels will head to Fayetteville to challenge league rival Arkansas.

Lane Kiffin held his weekly press conference for one final look back at last week's win over Oklahoma, as well as a preview of this week's tilt against the Razorbacks. TJ Dottery, JJ Pegues, Dae'Quan Wright, John Saunders Jr. and Henry Parrish Jr. also met with the media, which can be found below.

Unfriendly Fayetteville
Fayetteville, Arkansas hasn't been a welcoming site for Ole Miss football. The Rebels are just 2-13 there all-time with the wins coming in 2000 and 2008. Ole Miss' last two road wins against the Hogs have come in Little Rock, and the team is 0-2 on the road against Arkansas in the Kiffin era as the home team has won the last five matchups, a trend the Rebels hope to reverse this weekend.

"We've had a lot of really tough matchups over time against them, previous to me and since we've been here," Kiffin said. "We have to have a really good week of practice, do a really good job in all areas, especially with what looks like might be rainy weather on the road. This is going to be a really good challenge for us, one we're excited about."

Arkansas has already proven this season just how tough its home venue is when it took down previously undefeated Tennessee at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium just three weeks ago.

"They're a great football team. They've got a lot of talent on the front line and a great quarterback and good receivers. We control what we can control," Pegues said. "I feel like our week of preparation will be a great one. I'm excited to go over there and play them."

Dual-Threat Threat
One of the determining factors in the game could be the play of Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, who is second among SEC quarterbacks with 395 rushing yards this season. Green was phenomenal last week at Mississippi State, going 23-for-29 through the air with 393 total yards (314 passing, 79 rushing) and six total touchdowns (5 passing, 1 rushing).

"We've got to do a great job containing him," Kiffin said. "This guy is as talented and as long as they come. We're going to have to do whatever he tries to do. We're going to have to rush really well, contain him and have a really good plan. Coach Petrino for a really long time has done a great job on offense."

In Arkansas' two SEC losses to Texas A&M and LSU, Green netted six and negative-10 rushing yards, respectively. Outside of netting minus-5 yards against Tennessee, Green is averaging 85.8 rushing yards per game in Arkansas' wins.

"He can run really well. He's really good at making defenders miss and getting extra yards," Dottery said. "Definitely have to be disciplined. Just everybody doing their job and staying on their assignment rather than getting antsy and wanting to go get a sack."

Get Physical
Arkansas defense has been largely feast or famine, and whether or not the defense performs well has often indicated the outcome for the Razorbacks. The Hogs are allowing just 16 points per game in their five wins but have allowed 31.3 points per game in their three defeats. However, the impressive 19-14 win over Tennessee shows that they certainly have what it takes to shut down an elite offense.

"They're big up front, they're really physical," Kiffin said. "They've plugged in some portal guys at linebacker and DB who are doing a really good job for them. Even playing them at Alabama, they seem to play even tougher at home. So we're going to have to play really well."

Arkansas used its pass rush to sack UT QB Nico Iamaleava four times, and they dominated time of possession at 35:28 to 24:31, limiting the Volunteers' offensive opportunities. Ole Miss intends to be the more physical team to help reverse those trends.

"Really good team," Wright said. "Great defense. We just have to be the more physical group on the field."
