Volleyball Earns Emphatic Road Win at Auburn
10/30/2024 | Volleyball
AUBURN, Ala. – Behind a number of career-highs, the Ole Miss volleyball program surged to a signature SEC road win, downing Auburn, 3-1 on Wednesday night at Neville Arena.
Payton Brgoch and Nia Washington each led the team with 17 kills, with the former finishing with a season-high and .452 hitting percentage. Shayla Meyer finished with a career-high 21 digs alongside 13 kills, while Emma Ammerman stuffed the stat sheet with a season-best 12 kills, six digs, five service aces and three blocks to pace the Rebels (14-7, 4-5 SEC) over the Tigers (14-7, 4-6 SEC). Mokihana Tufono also added another vintage performance, recording 53 assists and 13 digs.
Following a home loss on Sunday, the Rebels came out hot against the Tigers, building an early 5-2 advantage, behind three early kills from Washington. Auburn provided a brief response, but the Rebels stormed back ahead with a 7-1 run, sparked by two kills and a block from Ammerman. The hosts could get no closer than three points back, as the Rebels surged to a 25-20 win with a diverse attack that featured several additional kills from Meyer and Brgoch.
After trading points through the first 10 of the second set, the Rebels began to break through. Tessa Jones began to assert herself in her first collegiate SEC start, with a pair of kills in a 5-0 run to put the Rebels ahead, 10-5. That lead would only expand further, as the Rebels built a 10-point edge late in the set. Another kill by Brgoch sealed a 25-17 advantage and a 2-0 lead for Ole Miss.
Both offenses surged in the third set, with each teaming soaring past their previous two hitting percentages. Ole Miss threatened to pull away early, as Brgoch continued to stack up kills and put the Rebels ahead 11-8. However, each time the Rebels created some distance, the Tigers responded, forcing the Rebels to ties on seven occasions. The hosts would get the break they needed earning three straight points to secure the third set, 25-22.
The dropped set would not deter the Rebels, who immediately responded with a 6-1 run, behind two service aces and a kill from Ammerman. Auburn quickly utilized its only two timeouts, but it wasn't enough to stop what became a 16-10 lead. Auburn made one last gasp, pushing the Ole Miss lead down to 18-16, but Meyer added a pair of kills and the Rebels put their feet down, finishing off a 25-21 set win and the match.
The Rebels continue their road swing with another matchup against a top-25 foe, traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to face No. 24 Florida on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
