Football at LSU: Series Snapshot

10/8/2024 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 8 Ole Miss football team continues its second-most-played series in a Top 10 battle against No. 10 LSU this weekend in Baton Rouge.

We've taken a look at the rich series history between the Rebels and Tigers, including last year's epic shootout win in this week's series snapshot.

Series Snapshot
Ole Miss and LSU will meet for the 113th time on Saturday, a series that dates back to 1894. The Rebels have only played Mississippi State (118) more than LSU in their history. The Tigers lead the all-time series 65-43-4 on the field, including an even 2-2 split in four games in the Lane Kiffin era. The home team has won each of the last four meetings in the rivalry.

Series in Baton Rouge
LSU leads the all-time series in Baton Rouge 43-24-1. Ole Miss last won in Baton Rouge in 2008 and has just two wins at Tiger Stadium since 2000, the other coming in 2001. Mike Wallace caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jevan Snead to spark a 31-13 rout of the Tigers in the 2008 matchup. The pair had another touchdown connection in the second quarter to take a 21-3 lead, and the Rebel defense intercepted the Tigers twice as Ole Miss never trailed in the win.

Last Meeting
The last meeting between Ole Miss and LSU was a shootout of epic proportions, resulting in a combined 1,343 total yards and 104 points scored. The Rebels raced out to a 21-7 lead when Jaxson Dart hit Jordan Watkins on a 63-yard touchdown to end the first quarter, but LSU battled back to take the lead and held a 49-40 advantage late in the fourth quarter. Dart led consecutive scoring drives late, hitting Tre Harris for the go-ahead score. Then the defense clamped down late, halting eventual Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels in a 55-49 final.

Last Meeting in Baton Rouge
Ole Miss' first trip to Baton Rouge of the Lane Kiffin era in 2020 was a mirror image of the 2023 meeting in Oxford: The Rebels led 48-40 late in the fourth quarter, and LSU mounted late scoring drives to win 53-48. In 2022, Ole Miss marched to a 17-3 lead in the second quarter and looked bound for that elusive win in Tiger Stadium, but LSU took control with a 42-3 run in a 45-20 final.

The Magnolia Bowl
In 2008, student governments from Ole Miss and LSU worked to enhance the spirit of the football rivalry and introduced the Magnolia Bowl. After first garnering the support of the universities' athletics departments and alumni associations, student leaders set forth in April 2008 with a "Name that Rivalry" campaign for students to provide input on the name via text messaging. The student governments then voted in their respective Student Senates. LSU holds a 10-5 edge in Magnolia Bowl meetings, with Ole Miss' win in 2013 being vacated due to NCAA ruling. The Rebels prevailed 31-13 in the initial playing of the Magnolia Bowl, also their last win in Baton Rouge.
