Women’s Golf Secures Second Consecutive Team Title at Illini Invitational at Medinah

10/8/2024 | Women's Golf

MEDINAH, Ill. – For the second straight event in a row, Ole Miss women’s golf was named tournament champions at the 2024 Illini Invitational at Medinah on Tuesday.

After improving their score by one stroke each round, the Rebels carded a total score of 834 (-30) to notch the second-lowest team 54-hole score in program history at the Medinah Country Club. This also marks Ole Miss’ fourth time in program history to secure medalist finishes in back-to-back events and the third time under head coach Kory Henkes after securing a victory at the Mary Fossum Invitational just two weeks prior.

Leading the field in par-3 scoring (-1) and ranking second in birdies (63) helped propel the Rebels to come from behind and earn the honor by three-strokes in the third round. Additionally, Ole Miss was one of only two squads in the 15-team field that had all golfers shoot below-par.

Once again leading the way for the Rebels was Caitlyn Macnab who strung together a trio of 69 (-3) round scores to shoot 9-under over the two days. Highlighted by a spotless front nine in the third round, the senior tallied her second top-5 finish of the year and 12th over her career after tying for third individually.

The freshman in Kajsalotta Svarvar built off her historic showing the day before, notching another round under-par to end the event firing 8-under. The Halmstad, Sweden, native bested all of her career-records in her third collegiate tournament, securing her low-18 (65), low-54 (208) and best individual finish (T7).

Filippa Sundquist also strung together a career showing, matching her lowest career round score with a 68 (-4) to go 7-under in Illinois. The sophomore was the third Rebel in the lineup to place in the top-10, securing a tie for 10th which also marks a career-best.

Ranking second in par-4 scoring (-5), Sophie Linder put together her third round under par this season, scoring a 71 (-1) in the final round of play in Medinah. The Carthage, Tennessee, native’s total scorecard of 213 (-3) would see her into a tie for 23rd, helping the Rebels secure their second title in three tournaments so far this year.

Rounding out the championship lineup for the Rebels was Nicole Gal who waited to shoot her best round score on the final day. Going 2-under on Tuesday with a bogey-free back nine, Gal tied for 34th with a two-day total of 215 (-1).

Competing individually for the Rebels was Larissa Carrillo who notched her best showing in her young career. Along with securing her career-low round score in the third round (69), the freshman strung together a career-best tournament score (211) and best individual finish (T14).

The women’s golf team was not the only Ole Miss squad that found success on Tuesday as the men’s golf team swept the Hamptons Intercollegiate. This marks just the second time in Rebel history that both teams earned top honors on the same day and the first instance since almost exactly 32 years ago on Oct. 13, 1992.
