Football Falls at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 9 Ole Miss football team outgained Florida by 100 yards at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, but the Rebels were unable to turn production into points, going 0-for-3 in the red zone and turning the ball over three times in a 24-17 defeat.

Jaxson Dart was 24-for-41 for 323 yards with two touchdowns but was sacked four times and threw interceptions on each of the last two Rebel drives as Ole Miss couldn't complete a comeback. Ole Miss was 3-for-14 on third down and turned it over twice on downs, in addition to two INTs and a muffed punt.

First Quarter
Ole Miss used its ground game to move past midfield on its opening drive, but Florida sacked Dart on third down to force a punt. Similarly, the Gators drove to the Rebel 45-yard line, where Trey Amos erased a third-down pass attempt to give it back to the offense.

Dart logged long completions to Cayden Lee and Dae'Quan Wright, and the Rebels benefitted from a late-hit penalty to make their way into the Florida red zone, but the Gators stopped a JJ Pegues rush attempt on 4th-and-1 for a turnover on downs.

Second Quarter
Florida completed several long plays to drive inside the Rebel 10-yard line as the first quarter ticked down. On the first play of the second quarter, DJ Lagway found a wide-open Elijah Badger for a touchdown as Yam Banks was injured in coverage on the play, making it 7-0, Gators.

Ole Miss responded, though, as Dart dropped a dime to Tre Harris for a 43-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive to tie it at seven.

The Rebels quickly turned that tie into a lead. John Saunders Jr. pulled in a spectacular one-handed interception on the following drive to set Ole Miss up for a chance to take the lead.

With just 55 yards to travel, Dart went to work, connecting with Caden Prieskorn and Jordan Watkins before delivering a 22-yard touchdown pass to Lee over the middle to give Ole Miss a 14-7 advantage.

Florida answered right back as Lagway notched a pair of long completions of his own, in addition to a pass interference call against the Rebels, and tied it back up on a 25-yard touchdown connection with Jadan Baugh.

The next drive was promise turned disaster for Ole Miss. The Rebels were rolling after long passing plays from Dart to Antwane Wells Jr. and Wright. Ole Miss appeared to convert on 3rd-and-7 inside the Florida red zone, but the Harris catch was overturned, and the star receiver was injured on the play and did not return. Kicker Caden Davis had a rare miss from 34 yards out on the following play as the Rebels came up empty.

Walter Nolen came up with an enormous 10-yard sack to smother Florida's next drive and give Ole Miss' offense one last chance in the half. The Rebels made their way near midfield, but faced 4th-and-3 and punted it away. Fraser Masin dropped it inside the 15, and Florida ran out the clock on a 14-14 first half.

Third Quarter
The Ole Miss defensive line came out inspired to start the second half. Princely Umanmielen and Pegues combined on a sack, then the Rebels drew a holding call, then Nolen dropped Baugh for a 4-yard loss to make it 3rd-and-29, ultimately leading to a punt to open the half.

However, Micah Davis muffed it, and Florida's DJ Douglas recovered at the Rebel 37. Nolen made another key play, batting down a Lagway pass to force a 53-yard field goal by Trey Smack to give the Gators a 17-14 lead.

Ole Miss put together a long drive in response but was turned away once again in the red zone after a pair of dropped passes. The Rebels faced 4th-and-1 at the Florida 10-yard line, but Pegues was stopped for no gain.

The Rebel defense stepped in with a key three-and-out, highlighted by a third-down sack from Umanmielen and Suntarine Perkins to force a punt.

Dart connected with Lee for 23 yards and added an 8-yard scramble to push Ole Miss into Florida territory once again, but the Gators sacked the Rebel quarterback to force a field goal attempt, and Davis connected from 42 yards out to tie it at 17.

Fourth Quarter
Florida made some headway on the ground in the first drive of the fourth quarter before the Rebel defense bowed up at midfield to force a punt, but Ole Miss went three-and-out in return.

Then came the game's winning drive. Lagway hit Chimere Dike for a 41-yard reception, then Montrell Johnson Jr. took three straight runs, going 12, five and nine yards for the go-ahead touchdown, making it 24-17.

Dart reeled off a 35-yard run to start the next drive but took a sack after two more dropped passes, and the Rebels were forced to punt as Masin pinned Florida at its own 6-yard line with 6:31 on the clock.

Nolen blew up a rush play, then Jared Ivey broke up a screen pass attempt to stop the clock and force a punt with four minutes to play.

Ole Miss methodically drove its way into Florida territory, but Dart tried a deep shot into the end zone to Wells and was intercepted with 1:32 to go.

The defense came up with a critical stop to give the offense one last chance, but Dart was intercepted again to end it.

Next Up
Ole Miss will close out the regular season in just six days with an Egg Bowl matchup against rival Mississippi State. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC on Friday, Nov. 29.
