Women’s Tennis Sends Three to Semifinals at Sectionals
11/8/2024 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Ole Miss women's tennis punched a few tickets to the semifinals in both doubles and singles on Friday at the ITA Sectionals in Athens, Ga.
Ludmila Kariesová had a remarkable day in Athens from start to finish, earning her 50th career doubles win and advancing to the final four in doubles alongside Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher. The duo defeated Xavier pairing Elizabeth Pendergast and Emily Flowers 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
In singles, Kareisová also qualified for the semifinals, after facing another Rebel, Emma Kette. In a guaranteed final four situation for Ole Miss, senior Kareisová finished on top.
Lucie Petruzelova battled back from a first set loss to defeat Florida's No. 103 Alisha Dudeney. The senior dominated the second set to force a tiebreak and held a 5-1 advantage over Dudeney at one point. After a vicious comeback attempt by Dudeney, Petruzelova sealed her win with the final point, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Leclercq-Ficher's run in the main singles draw ended after a loss to Georgia's Catherine Aulia. Kette and Leclercq-Ficher's tournament hasn't concluded, as they retake the court in Saturday's playoff to determine fifth-to-eighth-place finishers. Leclercq-Ficher will take on Dudeney as Kette faces Vanderbilt's Valeria Ray.
Kareisová and Petruzelova are set to represent Ole Miss against a pair of ranked opponents in No. 75 Guillermina Grant of Georgia and No. 81 Aulia of Tennessee. As it stands, Grant and Aulia are the first and second seed of the tournament.
Petruzelova will look to avenge Leclercq-Ficher against Aulia, while Kareisova hopes to topple top-ranked Grant.
Rachel Kryzyak and Kette battled for the final spot to round out the quarterfinals in doubles. After a tight matchup against Georgia, Ole Miss came out on top, 7(7)-6(5), 7-5. Kette and Krzyzak faltered in the quarterfinal round later on Friday, ending the duo's tournament run after a loss to Vanderbilt.
The semifinals in singles semifinals and doubles will begin Saturday morning.
