Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach Empress Davenport Selected to Participate in 2025 WBCA Next Generation Institute

12/11/2024 | Women's Basketball

ATLANTA – Ole Miss women's basketball continues its legacy of developing successful leaders within its program, as assistant coach Empress Davenport was named a participant in the 2025 Next Generation Institute, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

The recognition is a high-level education program for experienced assistant coaches who aspire to become collegiate head coaches.

Now in its third year, the Next Generation Institute curriculum focuses on the CEO attributes needed to lead a program and be a problem-solver in today's ever-changing landscape of higher education and the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics.

To be eligible for selection to participate in the program, a person must be a current WBCA member, must have at least five years' experience as a college assistant coach, and must have been nominated by their head coach. The Institute is held in conjunction with the WBCA Convention, which this year takes place April 3-6 in Tampa.

Prior to coming to Ole Miss, Davenport served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons at UTSA. A four-year letterwinner for Texas from 2012-16, Davenport reached three NCAA Tournaments as a player while averaging 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds during her career for the Longhorns.

After her playing days in Austin, Davenport played one season professionally overseas in Sweden before returning to the United States to serve as an assistant coach for two years for Nike ProSkills EYBL.

Davenport entered the collegiate coaching ranks in 2018, spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Lamar where in 2018-19 the Cardinals posted a 17-1 record in the Southland en route to going 24-7 overall.

In her final year at UTSA, Davenport assisted the Roadrunners to reach 18 wins for its most in a single season since 2009. A Duncanville, Texas, native, Davenport graduated from Texas with a bachelor's degree in applied learning and development in 2016.
