Sira Thienou Honored as SEC Freshman of the Week

12/17/2024 | Women's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a big-time career performance against South Alabama this past week, Sira Thienou has been recognized for her outstanding play as the SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

The accolade is Thienou's second SEC honor in her young career and second this season for an Ole Miss player. The guard is the first Rebel to earn SEC Freshman of the Week multiple instances in a single season since Madison Scott secured the first-year recognition six times during the 2020-21 season.

In Ole Miss' lone game of the week, Thienou registered a career-high 23 points, marking the first 20+ performance by a Rebel this season and the most points scored by a SEC freshman this week. The Bamako, Mali, native is the first Ole Miss freshman since the 2020-21 season to put up at least 20 points in a single game.

Thienou secured her career-high in free throws, making seven from the charity stripe on Sunday. She also matched her career-high in three-pointers with two makes off of two attempts, while narrowly missing her career-best in rebounds, sitting one board short after tallying seven.

Leading the team in points scored so far this season with 11.6 points per game, Thienou extends her double-digit scoring count to six games in her young career. This week, Thienou ranked in the top-5 nationally and second in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 87.5%. Additionally, with her 23 steals through 10 games, the freshman ranks eighth in the conference for steals and steals per game.

Thienou and the rest of the Ole Miss squad will remain at home to face Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 21. The game against the Devilettes will be broadcast on SEC Network+ with tipoff set for noon.
